Major Responsibilities- Utilize the nursing process to provide ongoing care tailored to the age‑specific and specialty‑specific needs of patients.
- Assess educational needs and provide teaching and counseling to patients and families.
- Integrate health promotion and preventive aspects of care and manage symptoms according to the treatment plan.
- Assess social determinants of health and coordinate appropriate resources such as navigation or social work.
- Assume primary responsibility for a caseload of patients within the specialty area.
- Anticipate and recognize changes in a patient’s status and adjust care accordingly.
- Determine priorities of patient care based on needs and the treatment plan.
- Provide ongoing assessment, apply interventions, and revise the care plan as needed.
- Communicate with physicians and other providers to confirm, correlate, and update the patient’s plan of care; provide regular status updates.
- Coordinate care with specialty services, including oral chemotherapy plans in the oncology setting.
- Administer medications in the infusion center, including chemotherapy, biologic therapies, antibiotics, and other IV medications.
- Perform central venous access device management and transfusion of blood products following guidelines.
- Provide telephone consultation, triage, and care coordination per protocol.
- Maintain and update accurate clinical and patient records in accordance with system policies and federal/state guidelines.
- Assist in the development and implementation of staff orientation and educational activities.
- Follow published policies and procedures and monitor for changes.
- Pursue professional development, including specialty certifications, and participate in shared governance activities such as journal clubs and grand rounds.
- Apply knowledge of growth and development over the lifespan to tailor care to each patient’s age‑specific needs.
- Registered Nurse license issued by the state.
- BLS for Healthcare Providers certification within 6 months.
- Oncology Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Card/Certificate within 30 days (preferred).
- ONC/ONCC Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy at Hire (preferred).
- OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) preferred for oncology departments; CRNI (Certified Registered Nurse Infusion) preferred for non‑chemotherapy infusion settings.
Associate’s Degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred.
Experience RequiredTypically requires 2 years of experience in a clinical setting with specialty experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required- Work independently and make sound judgments.
- Exceptional organization and communication skills (oral and written).
- Customer‑service orientation and ability to multi‑task with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to work with diverse patient populations.
May be exposed to cytotoxic and hazardous waste as well as blood, body fluids, and communicable disease. Must wear protective clothing and equipment as required.
Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
- Lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist.
- Lift up to 20 lbs over the head.
- Carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
- Push/pull with 30 lbs of force.
- Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present.
Must have functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with ability to use fine hand manipulation skills for IV insertion and other procedures. Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
