The Overnight Nursing Supervisor performs professional supervisory nursing practice in the care of the physically and mentally ill. Work involves responsibility for supervising the provision of quality nursing care, maintaining the quality and adequacy of nursing practice, coordinating nursing programs, and solving professional, administrative, and supervisory problems. The position exercises considerable judgment in applying professional knowledge to solve nursing problems within established policies and practices.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Determine optimal allocation of present staff, per shift and assignment on each unit.
- Coordinate the care of patients on assigned shifts and communicate shift concerns by the unit to appropriate staff (via e-mails, voice mail, etc.).
- Review 24‑Hour Report and assess patients as indicated for change of condition.
- Serve as the administrative authority for the smooth functioning of all units; notify the Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing, and Scheduler/Central Supply of urgent concerns during the shift.
- Receive employee, resident, and family grievances; refer information to the appropriate manager.
- Assist nurses in completing risk assessments and investigations of injury.
- Notify the Assistant Director of Nursing and Human Resources Director of identified learning needs.
- Receive employee call‑offs, record them, and update the schedule; notify managers/supervisors; replace for absences and vacancies for upcoming shift(s); assist staff with pick‑up hours.
- Work with the Staffing Coordinator and Director of Nursing to assure vacancies are filled in advance.
- Perform rounds to monitor the conditions and care of acutely ill patients.
- Supervise staff and assure survey compliance daily; provide guidance and support to staff to better plan workflow.
- Receive reports throughout the shift; complete reports as needed and required.
- Assist nurses in assessing residents experiencing acute changes.
- Provide clinical expertise in the management of medical and psychiatric emergencies.
- Respond to code blue, medical assistance situations; assist staff as needed.
- Provide clinical expertise in medical management, crisis, and behavior management techniques.
- Audit charts routinely; provide expertise in documentation (MDS, Medicare PPS, acute illness charting, weekly summaries, and care planning).
- Ensure timely notification of MD/Family Representatives where warranted.
- Obtain supplies from the medical supply after hours.
- Restock the crash cart immediately after use.
- Direct staff response to emergencies (severe weather, fire, or other disaster scares); participate in fire drills and direct disaster evacuation plan.
- Meet routinely with the Director of Nursing and Assistant Director of Nursing.
- Assist with the development and implementation of nursing policies and procedures.
- Attend facility Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement Meetings.
- Registered Nurse with current unencumbered state licensure.
- Supervisory experience in a team leader role.
- Work experience as a professional nurse.
- CPR certification.
- Required to sit, stand, bend, and walk regularly; lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Visual and auditory ability sufficient for written and verbal communication.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
