Function / Position Summary

Position is responsible for assisting the head coach with organization of the program. The assistant coach assists with conducting practices, motivating students, and instructing student athletes in game strategies and techniques.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Organizes and oversees specific program levels or areas of responsibility.
  • Works within the head coach’s organizational structure.
  • Works with the head coach and athletic secretary to verify that all participants are fully registered and eligible.
  • Develops game and practice schedules, facility use, transportation needs, and the program budget.
  • Plans and coordinates practice sessions and competition strategies ensuring the health and well-being of student participants.
  • Attends pre‑season parent meetings for all levels of sport to review eligibility, code of conduct, team rules, injury prevention, and inherent risks.
  • Manages and coordinates schedules throughout off‑season, summer, and in‑season periods.
  • Assumes responsibility for equipment inventory, selection, and care.
  • Maintains a safe facility and equipment associated with activities.
  • Communicates effectively with athletes, school administration, staff, students, parents, and community.
  • Maintains good public relations with media, boosters, officials, and local youth programs.
  • Establishes cooperative relationships with students, parents, staff, and school administration.
  • Works with student athletes of varying abilities, socio‑economic, and cultural backgrounds to instill commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
  • Handles stressful situations and thinks on feet.
  • Models sportsmanship and fair play to all participants.
  • Oversees academic eligibility and collaborates with teachers to prioritize academics.
  • Ensures protection of students, equipment, and facilities.
  • Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
  • Plans, organizes, and implements safe and effective daily practices and events.
  • Supervises all students before, during, and after practices and contests.
  • Applies and enforces student discipline according to U‑46 Athletic Code of Conduct and Student Code of Conduct.
  • Collaborates with head coach on fundraising activities and maintains accurate records.
  • Provides end‑of‑season individual and team records and statistics.
  • Contributes to long‑term program viability through relationships with local athletics organizations and K‑8 sports programs.
  • Attends Freshman Orientation and incoming 8th Grade Night as applicable.
  • Engages in personal professional development activities.
  • Performs other duties/events as assigned by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director.
Education
  • Certification with American Sport Education Program and/or valid Illinois teaching certificate.
  • Pass IHSA required tests and view videos.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
Experience / Knowledge
  • Knowledge of coaching theory, strategies, and techniques appropriate for high school athletes.
  • Proven record emphasizing sportsmanship, academic excellence, positive attitudes, and character.
  • Knowledgeable in techniques and strategies for the sport/activity.
  • Ability to handle and react professionally to stressful situations.
  • Background/experience in coaching.
Physical Demands
  • Standing for long periods, walking or standing extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity required to operate sports equipment.
  • Ability to work in various temperatures and weather conditions, including extreme high temperatures outdoors.
  • Can lift equipment up to 50 pounds.
Terms of Employment
  • Reviewed annually by Athletic Director & Head Program Coach.
  • Terms of employment determined by IHSA calendar and district policy.
  • Sport season follows IHSA calendar.
  • Student opportunities subject to environmental restrictions; positions and stipends adjusted accordingly.
  • ETA coaches: position can be renewed without reapplying if satisfactory status maintained.
  • Non‑ETA coaches: one‑year position; must reapply each year.
  • This is a stipend position.
