Position is responsible for assisting the head coach with organization of the program, conducting practices, motivating students, and instructing student athletes in game strategies and techniques.
Job Duties / Responsibilities- Organizes and oversees specific program levels or areas of responsibility.
- Works within the head coach’s organizational structure.
- Verifies that all participants have fully registered and are eligible.
- Develops game and practice schedules, facilities use, transportation needs, and program budget.
- Communicates and plans practice sessions and competition strategies to ensure the health and well‑being of student participants.
- Attends pre‑season parent meetings for all levels of sport to review scholastic eligibility, athletic code of conduct, team rules, injury prevention, and inherent risks.
- Manages and coordinates practice and competition schedules throughout off‑season, summer, and in‑season periods.
- Assumes responsibility for inventory, selection, and care of equipment for their level.
- Maintains a safe facility and associated equipment.
- Maintains effective communication with athletes, school administration, staff, parents, and community.
- Builds good public relations with media, boosters, parents, officials, and local youth programs.
- Establishes cooperative working relationships with students, parents, staff, and school administration.
- Works effectively with student athletes of varying abilities, socio‑economic, and cultural backgrounds to instill commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
- Think on your feet and handle stressful situations.
- Models and instills sportsmanship and fair play.
- Monitors athletes’ eligibility and works with teachers to prioritize academics.
- Protects students, equipment, materials, and facilities through precautions.
- Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
- Plans, organizes, and implements safe and effective daily practices and other scheduled events.
- Supervises all students before, during, and after practices and contests.
- Applies and enforces discipline per U‑46 Athletic Code of Conduct and U‑46 Student Code of Conduct.
- Collaborates with head coach for fundraising activities and maintains accurate financial records.
- Provides end‑of‑season individual and team records and statistics to the head coach.
- Contributes to the long‑term success of the program by building relationships with local athletics organizations and K‑8 sports programs.
- Attends freshman orientation and incoming 8th grade night, as applicable.
- Engages in professional development activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director.
- Proper certification with American Sport Education Program and/or valid Illinois teaching certificate.
- Pass IHSA required tests and view required videos.
- Maintain current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to implement effective coaching theory, strategies, and techniques appropriate for high school athletes.
- Proven record emphasizing sportsmanship, academic excellence, positive attitudes, and character.
- Knowledgeable in sport‑specific techniques and strategies.
- Handles professional and stressful situations effectively.
- Background/experience in coaching.
- Standing for long periods; walking or standing for extended durations.
- Requires perception of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, oral information transmission, manual dexterity with sports equipment, and handling various materials.
- Able to work in various temperatures and weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors, including extreme high temperatures.
- Able to lift equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Reviewed annually by Athletic Director & Head Program Coach.
- Employment terms per IHSA approved athletic calendar and school district policy.
- Sport season per IHSA calendar.
- Student opportunities may remain unchanged, be not offered, or require modification based on environmental restrictions; positions and stipends adjusted accordingly.
- For ETA coaches: if satisfactory status is maintained, position may be renewed without reapplying.
- For Non‑ETA coaches: one‑year position; must reapply each year.
- This is a stipend position.
