Position Overview

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of the senior leadership team at Jewish Family Service of Central NJ (JFS), responsible for safeguarding and strengthening the financial health of a dynamic, mission-driven social service agency with an annual budget of approximately $9 million. The CFO provides strategic financial leadership, ensures fiscal accountability, and oversees all financial operations in alignment with JFS’s mission, regulatory requirements, and long-term sustainability goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide overall leadership and direction for financial planning, management, and reporting.
  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of all financial operations.
  • Oversee cash flow and the development of financial policies and procedures.
  • Supervise and support the finance staff, ensuring high-quality fiscal operations and adherence to deadlines, including Claims Conference submissions and grant reporting.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing finance team.
  • Lead the development of the annual operating budget with the Executive Director and program leaders.
  • Present budgets and financial analyses to the Board and Finance Committee.
  • Monitor fiscal performance throughout the year, identifying and addressing variances and trends.
  • Attend all Board Meetings and all Finance Committee meetings.
  • Ensure timely preparation and distribution of accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide clear, data-driven insights to support organizational decision-making.
  • Oversee financial aspects of the agency’s Electronic Health Record (EHR), including reporting, billing workflows, productivity tracking, and clinical best practices.
  • Analyze EHR data to strengthen financial sustainability for clinical services, including Medicaid-billable social work programs.
  • Partner with clinical leadership to ensure compliance, maximize reimbursement, and improve operational efficiency.
  • Ensure full compliance with relevant federal, state, and local financial regulations, including IRS Form 990.
  • Coordinate the annual audit with external auditors and ensure timely completion of all audit-related activities.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and documentation standards.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor financial risk management strategies.
  • Ensure appropriate safeguards against fraud, waste, and mismanagement.
  • Advise the Executive Director and Board on financial strategies, long-term planning, cash flow forecasting, and revenue modeling.
  • Support sustainability initiatives related to Medicaid billing, fee-for-service models, fundraising, and grant diversification.
Qualifications & Experience Required
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent highly desirable or a Master’s equivalent in Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Proven senior-level financial management experience, ideally in a nonprofit or healthcare/social services environment.
  • Expertise in accounting principles, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Familiarity with Medicaid, government grants, and cost-based reimbursement models.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex financial data and communicate insights clearly.
  • Experience working with Electronic Health Record systems (EHR), including financial reporting and billing modules.
