the cosumnes community services district is seeking to hire part-time staff for the recreation instructor position for the recreation and leisure enrichment program. This position requires the instructor to be available to work an average of 2-10 hours per week, year-round. Actual hours assigned may be increased or decreased at any time depending upon the needs of the program.
under general supervision, the recreation instructor teaches recreation and leisure enrichment classes to a variety of skill and age levels. The recreation instructor may teach specialized classes for one or more recreation program areas, including the development and implementation of the program curriculum and budget, procurement of program supplies, and assisting with the training of support staff. This position directs activities and supervises participants at the site.
Functions and responsibilities expected to be performed may vary depending upon the area of assignment.
salary information: the recreation instructor's salary range is between $26.25 - $28.00 per hour. The district typically appoints new employees at step 1 of the salary range. Consideration for an appointment higher than step 1 will be based on experience, education, or the need for unique skills or knowledge and shall be no more than the mid-point of the salary range.

- provides group or private instruction to recreation participants of all ages and skill levels; evaluates participants and teaches according to defined program outlines, descriptions, and goals; maintains course record sheets;
- makes minor program modifications to match age and abilities of participants as needed;
- provides and develops new curriculum for district programs, including but not limited to, sourcing vendors for program materials;
- assists with the update of existing curriculum for district programs;
- assists in the development of marketing tools, including but not limited to, requesting and reviewing flier and class descriptions;
- may participate in the development of program budget;
- designs and implements training specific to their area of instruction;
- maintains constant watch over patrons in assigned areas and assists patrons in distress;
- evaluates and communicates participants concerns to the designated supervisor; reports any potentially unsafe conditions to designated supervisor;
- enforces rules and regulations of programs and facilities as mandated by csd policies;
- administers first aid as necessary; performs emergency procedures when needed;
- provides a safe and clean environment with adequate supervision by implementing guidelines from csd and department policies and procedures manuals;
- provides courteous and professional service to program participants, facility users, csd personnel, and the public;
- arrives on time and in proper attire/appearance as required by csd guidelines;
- accountable for all program participants during program hours; monitors behavior of participants;
- conducts set up and clean up of facility and equipment; may be charged with the opening and closing duties;
- attends and participates at staff meetings and trainings; depending on the assignment, may include monthly in-service trainings, planned and random skills tests, and in-pool assessments;
- designs and implements program specific training, provides hands-on instruction to onsite staff as required;
- completes appropriate reports and forms as necessary;
- conducts work tasks safely and in compliance with department safety standards and the csd injury and illness prevention program;
- provides positive and continual feedback to participants regarding progress;
- required to work shifts, weekends, and holidays;
- may communicate with parents, participants, and the public; refers program and participation concerns to the designated supervisor.
any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the district. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
education and training:
- high school diploma or equivalent.
certain assignments may require certifications. When specified, the certifications must be obtained by the time of appointment and must be retained throughout employment as a condition of employment.
experience:
- two (2) years of teaching and/or coaching in the area of instruction; or applicable degree or certification/designation in the area of instruction.
