The Sanitation Technician is responsible for the cleaning of all equipment and infrastructure in a thorough and efficient manner, adhering to the proper sanitation procedures and guidelines while following safety rules and using their designated PPE. This position is responsible for disassembling/reassembling plant equipment and protecting sensitive equipment from damage during the sanitation process. The Sanitation Technician must understand how to operate cleaning equipment and exhibit the proper use of all sanitation chemicals and resources per regulatory regulations.
Responsibilities- Always perform tasks according to safety and food safety standards.
- Participate in safety training programs and contribute to the development of safety initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (SQF, GMP, HACCP, OSHA) and company policies related to food safety, sanitation, and environmental regulations.
- Clean different types of machinery, using appropriate chemicals, and rotate cleaning areas daily.
- Cover all electronic devices and panels with plastic before wet cleaning.
- Use air nozzles with ear protection and bump cap in certain areas.
- Use water nozzles with proper PPE (apron, boots, bump cap) in certain areas.
- After cleaning, verify that all equipment is completely clean and all parts are properly assembled.
- Store cleaning equipment in designated areas and ensure not left in incorrect locations.
- Follow proper Lock Out/Tag Out procedures; ensure mixers, corn, and flour machines are turned off and blocked with safety locks.
- Work in a team to clean machinery when required.
- Weigh machinery waste accurately to maintain correct totals.
- Report safety hazards such as open electrical boxes or loose cables to the supervisor.
- Use ladders or scissor lifts only if trained; never climb on top of machines during cleaning.
- Label secondary container chemicals following OSHA-GHS procedures.
- Operate trash and recycling machines; notify supervisor when maximum capacity is reached.
- Wear PPE at all times: safety goggles, hairnet, apron, boots.
- Assist with janitorial duties as assigned (restroom, office area, property maintenance).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Grade school level;
High School Diploma or GED (a plus). - 1-2 years’ experience working in food manufacturing or similar industries.
- 1-2 years’ experience in sanitation procedures with food manufacturing equipment.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient math, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
- Basic computer skills.
- Excellent team player.
- Self‑motivated, able to work with little or no supervision.
- Comfortable working with water and chemicals.
- Work safely while maximizing productivity and efficiency.
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs; stand during prolonged periods.
- Perform tasks in adverse and awkward positions.
- Drive a forklift/industrial equipment (required).
- Reliable, punctual, schedule flexibility including weekends, holidays, and off‑shifts.
- Comply with company attendance and punctuality policy.
- Maintain safety alertness and compliance with drug and alcohol zero‑tolerance policy.
- Comply with all food safety, third‑party certification policies (SQF, Gluten‑Free, Organic, etc.).
- Continual walking and standing on wet, hard surface; climbing and descending steps.
- Continual bending, kneeling, squatting, stooping, reaching, pulling, pushing, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Drive industrial equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, pallet jacks.
- Exposure to rotating and reciprocating parts; cool, hot temperatures and noise.
- Must stand for long periods of time; temperatures range to very warm conditions.
