Cosumnes Community Services District – Urban Forestry Technician, Sr.

Responsibilities
  • Plant and stake new trees, apply mulch to the base, water newly planted trees using a portable watering tank, water non‑irrigated district‑owned trees, and load and transport trees.
  • Perform tree care functions including trimming, pruning, removal, and related tasks.
  • Drive, operate, inspect, and maintain tools and equipment used for tree maintenance programs, including chippers, stump grinders, chainsaws, hand tools, and tractors.
  • Diagnose plants and pests and implement corrective measures; advise on proper tree care and pest remedies to property owners.
  • Receive, process, complete, and maintain work requests and work orders for tree‑related services from management.
  • Respond to tree emergencies such as uprooted trees and broken limbs; clear trees and limbs from transportation avenues; notify management of any damage.
  • Maintain files, databases (including tree inventory), and records related to urban forestry programs and services.
  • Create and distribute public outreach and educational materials.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate special events, engaging stakeholders and the public.
  • Oversee and coordinate work performed by contractors, ensuring contractor compliance and reviewing safety practices; train, direct, and assist urban forestry volunteers.
  • Attend workshops and conferences to maintain industry certifications and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Experience: Three (3) years of responsible experience in tree maintenance, tree planting, and tree care.
  • Education and Training: High School diploma or equivalent with specialized training in tree maintenance, trimming, or a related field.
  • Special Requirements: Valid California class "C" driver’s license with satisfactory driving record;
    First Aid and CPR/AED certification within 30 days of employment, maintained thereafter.
  • Highly Desirable: International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) professional arborist certification;
    California State Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate.
  • Knowledge: Local tree species; insects, diseases, and corrective actions; arboricultural standards and best practices; tree‑care safety and PPE; operation and maintenance of hand and power tools, vehicles, and equipment; urban tree maintenance techniques; recordkeeping principles; district safety rules and protocols; customer service techniques;
    English language structure and grammar; modern equipment and communication tools for business coordination.
  • Ability: Perform skilled tree trimming, pruning, removal, planting, staking, and watering; recognize safety hazards and use equipment safely; operate and maintain tree‑care equipment; research and address pest diseases; prepare work records; coordinate with district departments and external agencies; direct and train volunteers; organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines; use computer systems and software; communicate clearly in writing and speech; foster positive relationships;

    exercise independent judgment.
Physical Requirements

Mobility: frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, climbing ladders, crawling, twisting; medium to heavy lifting up to 50 lbs. Vision: use of overall vision for color detection and reading. Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion for data entry and equipment operation. Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and communication. Emotional/Psychological: decision making, concentration, public contact. Driving: fine and gross motor coordination for various vehicles and equipment.

Working Conditions

Outdoor work year‑round in varying weather, frequent exposure to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, chemicals, fumes. Some work in indoor office settings. May require travel to multiple sites in a district vehicle.
