Media Center Coordinator

POSITION PURPOSE

Manages school library containing general and specialized materials for use by students, faculty, and administrative staff. Provides each student with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual probing, growth, and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of library resources.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Operates and supervises the library to which assigned.
  • Selects, orders, catalogs, and classifies the general collections and special collections of technical books, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, and other materials.
  • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services.
  • Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials, and instructs teacher and students on use of the system.
  • Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials and informs the teachers and other staff members concerning new materials the library acquires.
  • Assists faculty by making library materials available to supplement the instructional program.
  • Assist students with research problems while providing educational experiences in the area of library resources. Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
  • Prepares and administers the library budget.
  • Promotes appropriate conduct of students using library facilities.
  • Keys information into computer to store or search for selected material.
  • Trains other workers engaged in locating, filing, or copying selected material.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises student librarians. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the school’s policies and applicable laws pertaining to students. Responsibilities include interviewing and training student librarians and aides; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and recommending discipline; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma.
  • Ability to prepare written reports and correspondence.
  • Skills in human relations.
  • Ability to plan and organize; good work habits.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, teachers, and school staff.
  • Other qualifications that the School Board may require.
