Reports To

Young Adult Teacher of Record and Building Principal/Director of Exceptional Learners

Primary Function

Supports the Young Adult Program in providing instruction, skill development, supervision, and transition learning experiences for students ages 18–22. This role helps students build independence, employability, daily living skills, and successful community participation while implementing instructional and behavioral supports under the direction of the Teacher of Record.

Essential Duties
  • Assist in implementing instructional activities aligned to students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including functional academics, vocational training, community-based instruction, and daily living skills.
  • Support students during community-based vocational placements, workshops, volunteer activities, and life-skills instruction, ensuring safety, engagement, and skill acquisition.
  • Provide supervision and direct support in community settings, including job sites, travel training, and independent-living experiences.
  • Reinforce transition goals by modeling and teaching soft skills, employability skills, communication skills, and problem-solving strategies.
  • Support students in using adaptive equipment, communication devices, and assistive technology as needed.
  • Assist with data collection, progress monitoring, and documentation as directed by the Teacher of Record.
  • Implement behavior support plans consistently and support positive behavior strategies, regulation routines, and student independence.
  • Provide transportation supervision, including entering/exiting vehicles, safety checks, and appropriate support during travel to community locations.
  • Communicate effectively with school staff, families (when appropriate), community partners, and job supervisors to reinforce student success.
  • Assist in preparing materials, organizing instructional spaces, and maintaining equipment for classroom and community-based learning.
  • Support daily living tasks such as meal preparation, hygiene routines, and other independent living skills when required.
  • Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and training required for safety, compliance, and instructional support.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
    Associate’s degree or higher preferred.
  • Experience supporting students or adults with disabilities preferred.
  • Ability to follow instructional plans, behavior plans, and transition goals developed by the Teacher of Record.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to participate in required training, including CPR/AED, crisis prevention/intervention, and Article 7 compliance modules.
  • Demonstrated ability to support students in community settings, including job sites and independent-living environments.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel with the program as needed.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to move about school buildings and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Sufficient vision, hearing, and speech to conduct assessments and communicate effectively.
  • Frequent use of hands for typing, writing, and test administration.
  • Work is primarily in a school setting with moderate noise; some travel between schools may be required.
Work Environment
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • There are no environmental hazards indicated for this position.
