Surgical Technologist ERT

Reports to Manager or Director, Patient Care Services. Through the direct supervision of the professional nursing staff, assists in the care of patients undergoing surgical intervention and assists in the care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and unsterile supplies and equipment. The Surgical Technologist acts as a primary scrub person who handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure;

anticipates the needs of the surgeon; has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure; has an understanding of procedures being performed; is consistently vigilant for the maintenance of the sterile field; sometimes acts as an unsterile member of the surgical team, obtaining instruments, supplies and equipment while the surgical procedure is in progress.

Responsibilities
  • Uses highest standard of sterile technique in all aspects of surgical care.
  • Corrects non-aseptic conditions as they occur.
  • Performs appropriate counts with circulator as directed by hospital policy.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon to expedite the procedure.
  • Acts as assistant to the surgeon during the operation when needed, under the direct supervision.
  • Assists in emergency situations and uses sound judgment in instituting corrective procedures: performing CPR, monitoring sterility, calling for additional help, taking direction from the Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, Charge Nurse and/or circulating nurse.
  • Assists with clean‑up at the end of a case and prepares the room for the next patient, ensuring all trash and dirty instruments are removed and floors and furniture are free of blood and debris.
  • Stocks the room and linens as appropriate; cares for instruments for sterilization and adheres to cleaning standards.
  • Sets up supplies and equipment per physician’s preference card; assists with patient positioning.
  • Maintains patient privacy, dignity, and comfort: avoids exposing the patient unnecessarily, reports faulty equipment.
  • Follows policies and procedures of the Surgery Department: reports to the charge nurse, channels problems, performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
  • Updates preference cards and ensures necessary table parts and furniture are available.
  • Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the department’s effectiveness.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Recognized school of surgical technology or training in the Armed Forces; certification as required by state regulations effective July 1, 2009.
  • Must maintain 15 hours of continuing education annually.
  • Must obtain Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/CPR) within 3 months of hire.
  • Preferred membership in professional association.
  • Knowledge of fundamentals of anatomy and physiology; sterilization procedures; maintenance and care of supplies and equipment; basic knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation.
  • Basic knowledge and skills to activate power equipment, electrosurgery units, stapler placement, specimen handling, safety policies, and emergency disaster procedures.
  • Knowledge and skills to prepare operating rooms, perform scrubs, drape patients, and maintain aseptic conditions.
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, co‑workers, physicians, and allied health staff.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
  • Operates in a patient care/operating room environment that requires physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands, exposure to biohazards and anesthetic gases; may work long hours and be called on an as‑needed basis.
  • Must walk/stand for prolonged periods, push carts up to 50 pounds, lift patients up to 35 pounds unassisted, provide CPR.
  • At risk for occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens, gases, laser plume, Methyl Methacrylate, and radiation.
  • Must report to the work location within 30 minutes when on call; commit to weekend/holiday call schedule.
Additional Requirements
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout the fiscal year.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies, employee health and regulatory agency requirements within established time frames.
  • Available to work overtime and additional shifts and schedules when required.
