Elkhart General Hospital is a not-for-profit hospital located in Elkhart, Indiana. Our full-service, 357-licensed-bed hospital has served the community for more than 100 years with a variety of services including Emergency Department; radiology; orthopedics; maternity, pregnancy and childbirth; behavioral health; imaging and lab; genetic counseling;
DaVinci robotic surgery.

What You’ll Do
  • As a Surgery Registered Nurse, you’ll report to the Manager of Surgery and provide professional nursing services. You will assess the needs of patients and initiate, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care. This role will collaborate with other professional, clinical, and ancillary staff in providing quality care to patients.
  • Perform the priority (high risk, high frequency) technical procedures safely, effectively, efficiently, and legally.
  • Establish and/or revise priorities for job/patient care activities based on acuity, resource availability, patient needs, and department priorities.
  • Respond to data indicating potential or actual risk to a patient’s physical or emotional health by initiating corrective actions.
  • Advocate for the patient or family to achieve appropriate outcomes.
  • Maintain accountability for self and delegated actions and decisions, based on scientific principles, standards of practice, and organizational values.
  • Seek supervision or assistance when unable to perform effectively or safely, independently.
  • Use resources to resolve or prevent problems that cannot be managed independently.
  • Develop or revise a plan of care for assigned patients with measurable goals/outcomes reflecting patient and family values and needs.
  • Initiate or maintain interventions to assure continuity of safe, effective care across the continuum of care.
  • Modify, continue, or discontinue interventions based on evaluation of effectiveness and patient satisfaction.
  • Document consistently within established guidelines.
  • Use interpersonal communication to collaborate with the team to achieve desirable outcomes.
  • Delegate to other staff based on acuity and role, maintaining accountability for outcomes.
  • Maintain awareness of advances in clinical specialty.
  • Contribute to the department’s ability to achieve clinical excellence and patient-focused service.
  • Attend department meetings and complete required education within established time frames.
  • Maintain license/certification in good standing; maintain current BLS (CPR) and other required certifications.
Qualifications
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) required;
    Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Indiana.
  • Candidates hired after January 1, 2014, must have or obtain a BSN within five years of employment or become certified in their area of specialty; maintain certification per accrediting body standards.
