The Plumbing Inspector shall be appointed by the Mayor per City Ordinance. The authority, power and duties imposed on such Inspector and the provisions of the ordinance shall extend to and include any plumbing or house drainage, private sewer or plumbing work about to be done or being constructed on any premises, and the same for the purposes of the ordinance shall extend over all premises and to the boundary line of the public ways.

During their term as Plumbing Inspector, they shall not be actively engaged in the plumbing business nor shall they have a financial interest in any plumbing business.

• Administer the ordinance and take reasonable action to secure compliance.
• Supervise and witness all plumbing pressure tests.
• Condemn and order removal of unsanitary plumbing and notify owners or plumbers of condemnation and removal orders.
• Condemn and order correction of poor workmanship and notify owners or plumbers of correction orders.
• Inspect and determine code compliance of all new and replacement plumbing.
• Leave or give notice of approval or non‑approval of plumbing installation.

• Oversee registration of licensed plumbers, journeymen and apprentice plumbers.
• Investigate incidents where violations of the ordinance are suspected.
• Administer plumbing test to any owner‑occupier applying for a permit.

• Practical plumber licensed by the State of Indiana with at least ten (10) years actual experience as a plumber or plumbing inspector, and obtain inspector’s certification from a recognized certification agency within two (2) years of hire.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.

• Familiar with current plumbing code and proposed code changes.
• Knowledge of current methods of plumbing installation, practices and materials.
• Attend plumbing seminars, expositions, code meetings and related events.
• Familiar with preexisting plumbing codes and once‑common but no longer approved materials and installation methods.
• Attend meetings of local plumbers organizations.
• Foster good plumbing practices and relationships with local plumbers.

• Capable of traveling to field sites, see installations, and process visual input to reconcile with approved methods.
• Cognitive skills to know approved installation methods.

• Work performed in a 40‑plus hour week divided between office and construction sites.
• Inspections performed inside and outside in all weather and building conditions, including cold, dampness, dirt, noise, odors, and exposure to hazards.
• Negotiate in and around construction sites and recognize hazards with precautions.

• Drug‑free workplace required; passing a post‑offer drug screen mandatory.
• Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.

• Incumbent must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities, and the physical, mental, and visual skills described to perform principal duties and responsibilities.
