-tier pay based on completed hours, job proficiency, specialized training, and proficiency in maintenance of roadways and equipment.

As a Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator for Disforce-Heavy Maintenance in Randolph County, you will perform work across District 8 including Randolph, Pendleton, Tucker and Pocahontas Counties. Serving on a specialized heavy maintenance crew, you will work on large-scale projects such as box culvert installations, slide repairs, or bridge substructure and superstructure repairs. Your daily duties include operating heavy machinery - such as skid steers, utility tractors, aerial bucket trucks, front‑end loaders, tandem‑axle trucks, and snowplows - as well as executing essential roadside maintenance like patching, ditching, mowing, installing and removing sign posts, and setting up traffic control barricades and flagging.

This work requires high physical stamina, as it may involve operating hand‑held machinery that demands a great degree of strenuous activity, working in extreme conditions and lifting 75 pounds or more. Candidates must also remain available for emergency call‑ours and be willing to work day or night shifts during seasonal Snow and Ice Control (SRIC) operations.

• The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
• In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
• Tier 1 hourly rate: $18.3938

• Drive dump, flatbed, or tandem-axle trucks.
• Operate power vegetation equipment and attachments.
• Operate highway maintenance equipment and attachments.
• Operate heavy vehicles/GVWR 26,001 or greater.
• Clean and lubricate equipment and check fluid levels.
• Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters.
• Repair and construct various culvert types.
• Patch cement, pavement and bridge decks.
• Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces.
• Clean equipment and workshop.
• Transport fuel to equipment.
• Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment.
