Lead Civil/Geotechnical Engineer – US Mine Waste
WSP is seeking a Lead Civil/Geotechnical Engineer to join our US Mine Waste team, located in Reno, NV. This role involves leading design and execution of mine waste containment and heap leach facilities as part of a growing organization dedicated to providing solutions to clients.
Your Impact / Responsibilities- Lead civil design of mine waste containment (tailings and waste rock) and heap leach facilities, including initial layout, site selection, geotechnical and hydrologic analyses, and preparation of design drawings and technical specifications.
- Manage and execute a wide variety of mine waste geotechnical projects (field investigations, laboratory testing, data interpretation, and analysis).
- Scope, direct, and review complex geotechnical analyses (soil mechanics, stability, seepage, thermal modelling, deposition modelling, run‑out analyses for dams and spoil).
- Independently manage projects according to client‑approved scopes and deliver high‑quality reports on time and within budget.
- Provide or contribute to client relationship and business development activities.
- Lead multi‑disciplinary project teams and manage junior engineers.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or closely related discipline.
- 7–10 years of relevant post‑education experience in engineering and geotechnical design.
- Engineer license required.
- Experience with tailings management and heap leach facility design in the mining industry.
- Strong knowledge of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering.
- Client liaison and business development skills.
- Project management experience (scoping, tracking hours and expenses).
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and self‑leadership skills.
- High proficiency with technical writing, design software (Micro Station, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, GEOPAK, Geo Slope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS, etc.), and advanced spreadsheets.
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
- Experience coordinating subcontractors and adherence to safety policies.
- Ability to work required schedules and occasional travel.
- Master’s Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or related field.
- Willingness to work across business sectors and on short‑notice tasks.
- Enthusiasm for field work and travel.
