About Jerritt Canyon

The Jerritt Canyon deposit was discovered in 1972, and the first gold production from the property occurred in 1981. The Jerritt Canyon property contains 30,821 hectares of mining claims located in the mining-friendly state of Nevada. First Majestic acquired the Jerritt Canyon Gold Mine from Sprott Mining Inc. on April 30, 2021. In May 2023, operations were suspended to prioritize exploration and technical studies.

Jerritt Canyon is now entering a new phase of evaluation and planning, requiring substantial technical support to advance the work necessary for a potential future restart of operations.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated and technically minded Mine Planning Engineer I to support the development and execution of safe, efficient, and economically viable mine plans. The successful candidate will work closely with mining operations, geology, surveying, and other technical teams to develop short- and long-term mine plans, analyze production data, and support continuous improvement of mining activities.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent engineering graduate or early-career professional to develop practical experience in mine operations, mine engineering, mine planning, production optimization, and mining software.

Responsibilities

  • Create weekly and monthly operations plans that support the 12 monthly forecast.
  • Track daily mining activities and report on weekly and monthly actuals versus planned KPIs.
  • Develop mine designs, including pit/underground layouts, haul roads, benches, dumps, stockpiles, and other mining infrastructure as applicable.
  • Support mine production scheduling to meet safety, production, quality, and cost objectives.
  • Analyze production, geological, survey, and operational data to identify opportunities for improved mine performance.
  • Assist with mine optimization studies, including equipment utilization, material movement, sequencing, and resource allocation.
  • Prepare and maintain mine planning models, schedules, drawings, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Work with geology and surveying teams to ensure mine plans accurately reflect current geological models and surveyed conditions.
  • Support reconciliation of planned versus actual production, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
  • Assist operations personnel with the implementation of mine plans and provide technical support as required.
  • Participate in site inspections and field activities to verify operating conditions and ensure plans are practical and achievable.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, cost reduction, resource recovery, and operational efficiency.
  • Prepare presentations and technical reports for engineering, operations, and management teams.

The above duties and responsibilities represent the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Relevant coursework in mine design, ventilation, drill and blast, geotechnical engineering, mineral processing, geology, surveying, and engineering economics is preferred.
  • 0–2 years of relevant mining or engineering experience; recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Internship, co-op, summer placement, or university project experience in mining, mine planning, or technical services is highly desirable.
  • Exposure to open-pit and/or underground mining operations is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with mine planning/scheduling software such as Deswik, Whittle, and Ventsim or similar platforms is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and the ability to analyze and interpret engineering data.
