SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

The Deputy Sheriff is a journey-level classification. Persons in this classification may work alone, with a partner, or as part of a unit.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Processes business and emergency calls and prepares crime and miscellaneous reports on an as-needed basis.
  • Exercises authority consistent with the obligations imposed by the oath of office. Promptly obeys legitimate orders.
  • Coordinates efforts with those of other members of the department so that teamwork may ensure continuity of purpose and achievement of police objectives.
  • Communicates to superiors and to fellow officers all information obtained in the jail, which is pertinent to the achievement of corrections objectives.
  • Acquires and records information concerning events that have taken place since the last tour of duty.
  • Records activities during the tour of duty as required.
  • Maintains weapons and equipment in a functional, presentable condition.
  • Accountable for the securing, receipt, and proper transporting of all evidence and property coming into custody.
  • Confers with prosecutors and testifies in court on any manner arising from police business.
  • Cooperates and coordinates with other law enforcement agencies, correctional institutions, and the courts.
  • Conducts a thorough investigation of all offenses and incidents within the area of assignment. Collects evidence and records information to aid in identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders and the recovery of property.
  • Remains alert to conditions that foster, cause or indicate crime criminal activity. Takes preventive action to correct such conditions. Informs supervisors as soon as the situation permits.
  • Responds to situations brought to the officer's attention while during patrol or when assigned by radio.
  • Renders first aid, when qualified, to persons who are seriously ill or injured. Assists persons needing emergency services.
  • Remains in the assigned area throughout the tour of duty except when a law enforcement emergency necessitates a temporary absence or when the sergeant or supervisor has authorized a temporary absence.
  • Remains alert for all nuisances, impediments, obstructions, defects, or other conditions that might endanger or hinder the safety, health, or convenience of the public, or that contribute to disorder.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the latest trends, techniques, and legal developments in law enforcement.
  • Maintains knowledge of local, state, and federal programs, resources, and services available to the public.
  • Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Category I, II, III
  • Must maintain a valid Nevada driver's license

An employee in this position must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of basic modern law enforcement principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of the care, protection, and appropriate use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of all streets and ways of the county.
  • Working knowledge and correct usage of business English including spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and formats.
  • Working knowledge of business correspondence formats, record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records management techniques.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases for the purposes of creating, editing, and distributing information.
  • Thorough knowledge of all applicable federal and state laws and regulations, county ordinances and regulations, department rules and regulations, and relevant court rulings.

Skills

  • Demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills especially in dealing with the public.
  • Preparing clear and concise administrative and financial reports.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Understanding and carrying out complex written and oral communications.
  • Managing time effectively.
  • Typing 40 words per minute accurately.
  • Applying basic accounting concepts. Making and verifying arithmetical computations with accuracy and speed.
  • Using the tools and equipment listed below.

Abilities

  • Reacting calmly and quickly under duress and strain.
  • Complying with Elko County policies and departmental procedures.
  • Performing detailed clerical tasks in an accurate, orderly, and timely fashion.
  • Accomplishing organizational goals and working independently on assignments from beginning to end.

  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, city, county, state and federal officials and the public as needed. Dealing with problems courteously and tactfully.
