Position Overview
The General Laborer is responsible for safely performing a variety of construction duties to assist the highway, utility, grade crews or at various on‑site plant locations. The role involves manual tasks performed according to the supervisor’s instruction and requires independent work except for more complicated jobs.
Key ResponsibilitiesHighway Laborer:
- Prepares ground surfaces, removes debris, and operates ground compactors.
- Sets up fencing, barricades, and safety cones.
- Prepares manhole covers, openings, and water lines.
- Walks behind the paver machine to shovel and rake asphalt, levels asphalt, and removes items buried by asphalt.
- Cleans asphalt off tools and equipment daily.
- Assists with operating equipment such as paver, roller, backhoe, water truck, as needed.
- Performs other laborer tasks such as cutting concrete or asphalt with a saw, sweeping, etc.
Utility Laborer:
- Hand shovels to prepare ground trenches for pipes and utility lines.
- Attaches trench box and pipes to chains or guide wires to be lifted by heavy equipment operators.
- Installs shoring materials and guides pipes into place.
- Connects pipes using tools, lubricants, glue, grout, etc., builds couplings, connectors, and mechanical joints.
- Sets up and operates laser level tripod and pipe lasers.
- Assists with operating equipment such as front end loader, excavator, backhoe, skidsteer as trained.
Grade Laborer:
- Hand shovels and rakes to perform groundwork.
- Cuts concrete with a saw to finish grades.
- Removes and replaces sewer/manhole/sump castings and covers.
- Assists the grader with grading tasks.
- Performs other laborer duties as required.
Crusher Laborer:
- Performs machinery maintenance and repairs; unplugs and clears conveyors and screens.
- Greasers moving machine parts and performs repairs.
- Sets up and takes down crusher machinery, runs cables and hoses, assembles/disassembles machinery, operates skidsteer, tarps, shovels aggregate.
- Maintains cleanliness of the crusher machinery area and moves materials.
- Participates in daily THINK/TRACK meetings and weekly safety meetings.
- Assists in plant production, stockpiles materials, feeds hot plant, ensures efficient operation.
- Operates front end loader, skidsteer, end dump truck, and heavy equipment as needed.
- Performs plant maintenance and repairs, including welding, and setup/takedown of traveling plants.
Other Duties:
- Uses hand and power tools.
- Picks up and delivers construction materials.
- Performs job site clean‑up.
- Assists with flagging and traffic control.
- Maintains tools and equipment in a safe, clean condition.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education/Experience- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous related experience in the construction field is a plus.
- Read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos.
- Write correspondences and memos.
- Perform basic math in all units of measure.
- Apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
- Work well with others in both group and one‑on‑one settings.
- Use inventory and order processing systems; job‑specific computer system for ticketing; two‑way radio for communications.

- Current and valid driver’s license.
