Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems and Controls (PS&C) facility in Elkton, Maryland. The facility has been producing solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems since 1948 and serves as the hub for offsite engineering and test facilities in Ronkonkoma, NY and Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
ResponsibilitiesThe Sr Principal Research Scientist initiates the design, development, execution, and implementation of technology research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products.
- Define and execute research tasks, analyze data, publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals, and present research at scientific conferences.
- Define research projects with assistance from management, focusing on basic science questions.
- Plan and execute applied research, maintain knowledge of state‑of‑the‑art principles and theories, and contribute to scientific literature and conferences.
- Possibly develop patent applications.
- Coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts.
- Must have a Bachelor's degree in STEM studies and at least 8 years of experience. Masters with 6+ years or PhD with 4+ years also considered.
- Ability to advance and prioritize multiple projects concurrently.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret clearance; U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) preferred.
- Experience with solid propellants or energetics.
- Working knowledge of polymers and polymer processing, such as viscosity, stress/strain relationships and other concepts.
- Active secret clearance.
Primary Level Salary Range: $ – $. Base pay may be complemented by overtime, shift differential, discretionary bonuses, and long‑term incentive plans. Benefits include health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, company‑paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO). Northrop Grumman encourages employees to share in company results and offers annual bonuses based on individual and company performance.
