Motor Equipment Operator II - DPW - Bureau of Highways - Mayfield Shop

Position Summary:

Approximately $50,668 – $55,895 annually. Salary range $24.36–$26.87 per hour.

This is skilled work at the crew leader level involving the driving of heavy trucks, operation of heavy motor and construction equipment, complex mechanical equipment, and hand power tools. Work includes manipulating a variety of complex controls simultaneously or non‑simultaneously during the operation of a vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various motor equipment such as bulldozer, grader, hydraulic excavator, roller, loader, water truck, and dump truck for highway maintenance; operate forklift, compressors, trenchers, and other equipment as needed.
  • Transport equipment and materials using tractor and trailer; operate highway striping vehicle and personnel carrier lift truck for tree trimming and other duties.
  • Perform skilled construction and maintenance work including excavation, road resurfacing, clearing trees, brush and debris removal, grading shoulders and banks, snow removal, laying pipe, highway and paint striping.
  • Read blueprints, contract maps, and sketches; train subordinate crew members in equipment operations, trades practices, and in the care and use of tools and materials.
  • Observe instrument while vehicle in operation; take corrective action for malfunctions; inspect vehicles for loose parts, damaged or worn tires or tracks, proper air pressure; perform routine preventive maintenance.
  • Complete work orders, job sheets, time sheets, and records of activities; maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and others.
  • Manage crew when supervisor absent to complete tasks.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • May direct a crew of coworkers in the absence of the supervisor.

Preferred Education, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, hazards, and safety rules for heavy construction and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of county geography and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Skill in safe and efficient operation of heavy motor equipment, aerial lift trucks, manual and power tools.
  • Ability to read blueprints and contract maps; understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to perform heavy labor for prolonged periods in adverse weather; maintain professional relationships.
  • Experience with personal computers or ability to learn.

Physical Demands

  • Talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, use hands, lift or move up to 50 pounds.

    Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, smelling, tasting.
  • Exposure to weather, moving traffic, mechanical parts, vibration, high places, loud noises, fumes, chemicals, electrical shock.

Language, Mathematical and Reasoning Skills

  • Ability to read, write, comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Present information one‑on‑one and to others.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units.
  • Apply common sense to detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Deal with problems involving few variables in standardized situations.

Qualifications

  • Valid Class “A” CDL license issued by the State of Maryland and DOT physical card prior to appointment.
  • Possession of Maryland approved flagger program card; confined space training certification; قت tree expert license may be required.
  • Preferred education:

    completion of tenth grade and two years of experience operating motor equipment or two years of progressively responsible manual labor.
