City of Ellsworth – Public Works Department
The City of Ellsworth is seeking a dependable, safety-focused individual to join our Public Works team as a Full-Time Equipment Operator. This position plays a vital role in maintaining safe roadways, supporting seasonal operations, and providing essential services to the community.
Key Responsibilities- Operate trucks, heavy equipment, and specialized municipal vehicles for winter snow and ice control and summer road maintenance.
- Perform snowplowing, sanding, and salting operations during winter weather conditions.
- Assist with road maintenance and repair activities, including paving, patching, grading, resurfacing, and drainage improvements.
- Load, transport, and unload materials such as gravel, asphalt, road salt, and other construction materials.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections and perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment; report mechanical issues as needed.
- Follow all safety procedures, traffic regulations, municipal policies, and environmental guidelines while operating equipment.
- Set up work zone traffic control, including barricades, signage, and directing traffic.
- Participate in emergency response efforts, including storm cleanup and roadway hazard removal.
- Perform general and manual labor as required, including shoveling, raking, debris removal, and site preparation.
- Maintain accurate records and logs related to vehicle and equipment usage, maintenance, and work performed.
- Exercise sound judgment in evaluating conditions and making operational decisions.
- Communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, other City departments, officials, and the public.
- A valid Class B CDL with a clean driving record (no infractions or violations)
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening (required for all CDL positions)
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
Physical Requirements
- Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and inclement weather.
- May require working extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays, particularly during emergency situations such as snowstorms.
- Exposure to loud noise, dust, fumes, and vibrations from heavy equipment and road maintenance activities.
- Work may involve exposure to traffic hazards and requires high situational awareness.
- Ability to lift and carry up to [50-75] pounds regularly.
- Ability to sit for extended periods while driving and operating equipment.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb in and out of trucks frequently.
- Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity required for vehicle operation and equipment handling.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
