City of Elmhurst Employment Opportunity Part‑Time Customer Service Representative
Under general supervision, this part‑time position is primarily responsible for handling routine office support services in the Finance Department. There is a high volume of customer interaction in both person and telephone calls responding to and resolving customer concerns, complaints and questions for utility billing, parking permits, citations, vehicle licenses, and real estate transfer taxes.
Essential Functions- Answer and direct incoming calls on the Switchboard.
- Take payments at a customer service counter. Enter cash receipts; balance cash, checks, and charges for deposit preparation daily.
- Perform entry of accounts payable information into the City’s software system.
- Provide information to the public or to City or departmental staff that requires the use of judgment and the explanation of policies, rules or procedures.
- Enter and retrieve data from a variety of software applications and conduct account research to provide information to customers.
- Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the department’s service to customers by offering suggestions and participating as an active member of a work team.
- Perform a variety of general office support work such as organizing and maintaining various files, typing correspondence and data entry.
- Establish and maintain office files; research and compile information from such files; assist in purging files as required.
- Answer customer service telephone calls related to City services, including utility billing, parking inquiries and general switchboard calls.
- Provide general support to other department functions through cross training, covering specific roles or duties as needed.
- Perform such office support activities as opening and distributing mail, processing outgoing mail, etc.
- Graduation from high school; AND three (3) years of general clerical experience, two (2) years of which include accounting or financial experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Accurate collection, handling, and deposit of payment receipts.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate with the public, in person and over the telephone.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and related applications.
- General knowledge of financial record keeping and bookkeeping practices and techniques.
- Practices of reviewing financial documents for completeness and accuracy.
- Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
- Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff. Acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.

- Reading and explaining rules, policies, and procedures.
- Analyzing and resolving varied financial office administrative problems.

- Reviewing financial documents for completeness and accuracy.
- Reviewing, posting, balancing, and reconciling financial records.
- Maintaining accurate financial records.
- Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
- Organizing own work, setting priorities, and meeting critical deadlines.
- Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
- Dealing successfully with the public, in person and over the telephone, often where relations may be confrontational or strained.
Pay Range: $26.35/hour to $36.89/hour. This is a permanent part‑time position working up to 19 hours per week, no more than 1000 hours annually, and is considered non‑exempt under FLSA with a paid time off benefit. The work schedule will be Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm for lunch coverage purposes.
