Position: SWISS/TURN-MILL MACHINIST – CLASS I

BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Swiss/Turn‑Mill Manager, provides support to the operation and maintenance of the Swiss/Turn‑Mill department by performing the duties listed below.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform production of implants and custom instrument parts using CNC Swiss-style screw machines and/or CNC Turn-Mills.
  • Perform complex setups of implants and custom instrument parts with minimal supervision using CNC Swiss-style screw machines and/or CNC Turn-Mills.
  • Reads blueprints and/or specifications to understand and apply the requirements of products to accurately and legibly process work orders.
  • Maintains/measures product dimensions, examines functionality, and compares the product to required specifications to ensure final products meet Customer expectations and Company standards.
  • Performs and documents first piece inspection for new setups utilizing the proper inspection equipment and gages, taking full charge of the product quality assessment.
  • Documents in-process inspection outcomes by completing detailed reports. Communicates the results of inspections, and provides corrective suggestions to Supervisor and/or manufacturing personnel.
  • Interfaced with QC (i.e. regarding first piece inspection) as needed.
  • Observe, guide, and provide support to Swiss/Turn-Mill Class II Machinists when needed. Takes the lead when needed to complete team assignments as requested by the Swiss/Turn-Mill Manager or designate.
  • Properly use tools to complete the machining process – includes the maintenance, sharpening, and replacement of tooling when necessary. Troubleshoot general machining issues – edit CNC code to solve machining issues when needed. Assist Class II machinists with machine troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Utilizes all types of measuring instruments (i.e, micrometers, depth micrometers, verniers, and other related equipment) to inspect parts in accordance with the appropriate output samples and inspection methods defined on provided inspection guide sheets.
  • Applies line clearance and maintains the manufacturing area, keeping it clean and organized. Keep machine(s) and work area clean from oils, chips, and unwanted materials.
  • Contribute to a safe work environment through the correct use of equipment and reporting machine malfunctions.
  • Actively participates in Company 6S/Lean initiatives.
  • Recommends improvements to the production process to ensure quality control. This also includes recommending tooling improvements to enhance current processes.
  • Works independently and/or within a team on special/non-recurring ongoing projects – occasionally includes assisting in the completion of Validation/equipment qualification “OQ” and/or performing Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gage R&R) studies for gages and fixture setups.
  • Acts as a steward of the Phillips Precision brand, consistently representing and reflecting the company’s core values to maintain and elevate the Swiss/ Turn-Mill department standards of excellence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS Experience & Expertise
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience working as a set-up machinist.
  • Capable of setting up/operating Swiss/Turn-Mill jobs to layouts supplied. Ability to write programs for simple parts.
  • Ability to read and interpret blue prints and specifications. Knowledge of sampling and inspection plans.
  • Capable of identifying and selecting the correct tooling for specific materials and/or processes.
  • Working knowledge of G-codes and standard controls (Fanuc a plus).
  • Capable of performing simple math calculations, as well as basic geometry.
  • Familiarity with the utilization or measuring instruments – comparator, height gages/electronic height gages, caliper, thread plug gages, and other job-related hand tools.
  • Familiar with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Prior exposure to Medical Device industry/working in compliance to ISO 13485 and/or ISO 9001 is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven record of success working in a fast-paced, high pressure, deadline-driven work environment.
Physical Demands
  • Required to stand for long periods of time.
  • May involve some repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.

May also engage in frequent bending, stooping, squatting, pushing and pulling.
