Research Scientist – PVD Experience Required - Fixed Term Contract

Michell Instruments, part of the Dwyer Omega group, designs and manufactures precision sensing instrumentation for industrial customers worldwide. With 13 global R&D and manufacturing sites, we support applications across gas treatment, renewable energy and advanced process control.

We’re seeking a Research Scientist (PVD) to join our multi‑disciplinary R&D team as we continue to grow and expand, contributing hands‑on to the development of next‑generation sensing technologies.

• Hands‑on research supporting sensor and measurement technology development
• Design, deposition and characterisation of thin‑film materials
• Collaboration with engineering teams to translate research into new product developments
• Technical reporting and knowledge sharing across the R&D function
• Identification of technical risks, including manufacturability
• Providing technical expertise and support to colleagues

• Strong background in PVD techniques, including evaporation and sputtering
• Electron beam evaporation (e‑beam) experience highly desirable
• Thin‑film characterisation and understanding of material properties in multilayer devices
• Experience working with sensors and measurement systems
• Comfortable working in multi‑disciplinary R&D environments

• Master’s degree or PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science or Physics

• Inquisitive, self‑motivated and pragmatic
• Comfortable solving complex technical problems
• Clear communicator with strong attention to detail
• Enjoys collaborative, hands‑on research work
