Overview

Roasting Team Member role at Counter Culture Coffee. The work environment can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter; the warehouse has climate variation and is noisy. The candidate must be able to multitask and operate effectively with distractions. A valid US driver’s license is required.

Job Details

The primary task for this position is to train in the processes involved to roast coffee to Counter Culture Coffee Flavor standards, profiling, and quality to graduate into a production roaster. The Roasting Team Member must express a strong interest in coffee, have experience in the specialty coffee industry, be self-motivated, demonstrate a willingness to work hard, and commit to the team.

Regarding the work environment: the warehouse can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter; it has climate variation and is noisy. The candidate must be able to multitask and perform effectively with frequent and varied distractions. A valid US driver’s license is required.

Job Description

The main working area is subject to environmental conditions and can be very hot or very cold depending on the season. A typical day is about 8 to 8.5 hours, with overtime sometimes required to finish tasks.

The majority of the roasting time will be spent standing or moving, with a daily workload of about 4,000–6,500 lbs of coffee. You will be expected to move this weight daily.

Coffee burlap bags start at about 130 lbs and can be heavier. Equipment to aid handling is provided, and you may be required to be certified to use equipment such as a forklift or pallet stacker. You should be comfortable with large machinery and troubleshooting equipment; regular maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment is expected.

Comfortable with cupping coffee, discussing notes with other professionals, and working independently when needed.

Requirements
  • Prior roasting experience is a must, or comparable experience in profiling, tasting, and working with specialty coffee.
  • Ability to move 160 lbs multiple times throughout the day.
  • Ability to push up to 1,540 lbs with a pallet jack.
  • Ability to process up to 6,500 lbs of green coffee daily.
Job Duties
  • Receiving green coffee shipments and storing them in logical, appropriate bays of the warehouse.
  • Pulling green coffee and loading roasters.
  • Roasting coffee to order each day.
  • Logging data for the roasts produced and documenting organic purges.
  • Working within the Netsuite system.
  • Understanding the quality control regiment as set forth by the Coffee Department.
  • Performing as an effective and skilled coffee taster.
  • Managing roasting byproducts (chaff, burlap, Grain Pro) to maximize reuse or recycling.
  • Operating an Optical Sorter and contributing to daily sorting of roasted coffee.
  • Learning and operating a forklift safely to load/unload pallets and rack coffee.
