Position Summary

OR Scrub Tech/OR Scrub Nurse:
Prepares operating rooms for surgery, using appropriate techniques. Provides technical services and assists the surgical team before, during and after surgery, as assigned and directed, in accordance with approved methods, techniques and within the scope of practice.

Principle Functions And Responsibilities
  • Scrub Tech:
    Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Pulls supplies the day before surgery to assure all items are available.
  • Places equipment and supplies in operating room and arranges instruments, according to instructions. Assures that all equipment and protocols are in place to support new procedures.
  • Sets up cases with proper instrumentation and supplies prior to case.
  • Follows hospital policy for Surgical Hand Scrub.
  • Performs accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts with RN adhering to hospital policy.
  • Maintains organized sterile field ensuring instrumentation is kept free from bioburden and instruments returned to correct trays in a safe manner to prevent damage or injury.
  • Accurately prepares specimen, delivers to collection area with identifying labels filled out correctly.
  • Assists in room monitoring of equipment, temperature and humidity notifying circulating nurse to escalate the issue if indicated.
  • Ensures proper body alignment during intra-operative phase by position monitoring checks e.g., feet, arms etc.
  • Washes and sterilizes equipment. Cleans operating room.
  • Keeps physicians’ preference cards updated.
  • Keeps unit updated as to new surgical procedures or changes.
  • Demonstrates competency as a surgical technologist.
  • Serves as a resource to other units and precepts new staff as assigned and demonstrates sound clinical and positive interpersonal skills.
  • Fosters good public relations for the Operating Room, the Nursing Department and the Hospital.
  • Shall perform all administrative, clerical and other duties that are required or assigned by regulatory agencies, insurance carriers or administration.
  • The employee will maintain positive and effective relations with co-workers, other departments, patients and visitors.
  • Will assist in duties for the central sterile tech
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
Qualifications

III. Position Qualifications/Requirements
  • Minimum Education:
  • Certification as a surgical technologist preferred, or similar experience in practical nursing or an operating room
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification or obtained within 6 months of higher.
  • Minimum

    Experience and Skills:
  • One to two years of experience working in an Operating Room as a Scrub Nurse or Technician. Certification as a surgical technologist preferred, or similar experience or an operating room
  • Certification as a surgical technologist preferred, or similar experience in or an operating room. If this is an RN must have unencumbered license in IDAHO.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of Infection Control, Sterile Technique, and Anatomy and Physiology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment and supplies located in the operating room
  • Continuing in-services and educations program required
  • Current Basic Life Support certificate required
  • Physical Requirements:

    Extensive walking, standing. Lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transferring of patients.
  • Ability to interact comfortably with a patients, families, and staff in a stressful environment
Working Conditions

Potential exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues and to patient elements in general. Exposed to a variety of electromechanical hazards. Subject to hazards of flammable, explosive gases.
