Responsibilities
- Prepare relaying philosophies and select relays, controls, and communications equipment; develop SCADA and telecommunication concepts and oversee I/O assignments and connection diagrams.
- Guide junior and senior engineers and designers in protection and controls engineering design efforts, coordinating detailed design phases.
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve a wide variety of engineering issues.
- Perform analysis and design of single‑line diagrams, substation relaying & metering diagrams (AC schematic diagrams), and DC schematic diagrams.
- Prepare engineering studies for client and peer review.
- Perform independent reviews of calculations and drawings produced by others.
- Coordinate and provide guidance to engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers to ensure complete and timely design.
- Review existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, and present findings to clients and peers.
- Develop your career through peer‑learning and knowledge sharing within Sargent & Lundy’s Communities of Practice.
- Mentor less experienced engineers.
- Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews, site location planning, construction coordination, and field verification of designs.

- BSEE with a power systems or controls emphasis from an ABET‑accredited program.
- 10+ years of experience focusing on protection, control, and telecommunications for high‑voltage substations, including design, installation, and coordination.
- PE license.
- Experience serving as a firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role.
- Experience writing and supporting relay calculation documentation.
- Experience with design techniques, tools, and principles for technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
- Proficiency with SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, CDEGS, or vendor software.
- Knowledge of design codes and standards such as NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.
- Experience with vendor protective relay equipment: SEL, ABB, GE, Areva, Basler.
- Proficiency with MS Office applications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with busbar and equipment protection, breaker, transformer control, RTU and data concentrator‑based SCADA systems, telemetering, and communications.
- AutoCAD or Micro Station experience.
- Construction and start‑up experience.
- Testing or commissioning experience.
This role offers a hybrid work arrangement: three days a week in the office with the flexibility to work remotely for two days. Depending on location, a generous relocation package is available.
