Job Summary:

The Lead Fiber Technician is responsible for all aspects of fiber, including installing, terminating, testing and splicing.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Basic copper termination skills.
  • Install work‑area outlets for floor, modular furniture, and wall; terminate CAT 3 & CAT 5 jacks, mount face plates and surface‑mount boxes, and adhere to IES commercial labeling standards.
  • Build closets: mount and install backboards, cross‑connects, racks, patch panels, fiber‑optic and hardware; install grounding; complete all IDC connections, e.g., terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels.
  • Perform cable testing: continuity tests on horizontal and riser cable, use volt‑ohmmeter, troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs; use tone set.
  • Install and terminate fiber connectors (LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, MPO/MTP) for multi‑mode and single‑mode systems; terminate simplex/dyplex jumper cords and outside‑plant loose‑tube fiber (e.g., Corning/Commscope, 3

    DNX).
  • Terminate indoor tight‑buffered multimode and single‑mode fiber; install fan‑out kits, calculate end‑to‑end loss budgets per TIA/EIA standards.
  • Use OTDR and Fluke DTX 180 for testing; troubleshoot using OTDR for end‑to‑end and network‑wide issues.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing on all types of fiber cable; conduct building entrance splices, maintenance‑space, and direct‑buried splices.
  • Use tools: screwdriver (regular & Phillips), drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips, pliers (needle‑nose & channel‑locks), hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight, gloves, punch tool, tone set, multi‑position crimp tool, Krone/3M/BIX.
  • Maintain accurate IES paperwork: timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, job blog, tool transfers.
  • Annual compensation: USD $32.00 / yr. (minimum) to USD $37.00 / yr. (maximum).
Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Self‑motivated, positive, professional; promote company culture and mission.
  • Proficient with listed tools and competent as company liaison for customer interfaces.
  • Strong problem‑solving, critical‑thinking, written and oral communication skills.
  • Capable of working at heights, ladders, confined spaces; lift up to 50 lb, move up to 75 lb; visual and auditory acuity for color recognition, small print, audible signals.
  • Willing to travel within branch or regional territory as needed.
Education, Certifications, Licenses, and Skill Requirements:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Proficiency in terminating all connector types and methods for SMF/ MMF systems (Unicam, anaerobic, heat‑cure).
  • Experience in testing and troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS).
  • Compliance with IES driving standards policy.
  • Prefer 3‑5 years fiber experience, industry certifications (Corning/FOA), data‑center installation, mechanical & fusion splice experience, OSP/confined‑space entry experience.
  • No minimum education requirement beyond High School; 2‑4 years experience preferred.
  • License required:
    None specified.
