Position SummaryThe RN has multiple roles and functions including caregiver, decision‑maker, client advocate, manager, rehabilitator, comforter, communicator, and teacher. Functions include assessment of the nursing needs of the patient, initiation of the plan of care of nurse action, implementation of the plan of care and the evaluation of the process through use of the nursing process. The Standards of Practice set forth by professional nursing associations provide guidelines for competent, safe and professional practice.
The RN promotes the dignity and quality of the nursing care given to the patient.
- Ensures patient dignity and respects patient values.
- Provides for patient safety, privacy and confidentiality.
- Able to assess and reassess the needs of the patient.
- Completes nursing assessment within 24 hours of admission.
- Able to communicate needs of the patients.
- Conducts therapies in accordance with patient’s diagnosis and needs.
- Provides efficient discharge planning throughout process.
- Completes proper documentation of progress notes and assessment according to program procedures.
- Completes individualized treatment plans for each patient.
- An active member of the interdisciplinary treatment team.
- Serves as the primary nursing care coordinator for assigned patients.
- Plans, implements and coordinates nursing care activities for assigned patients.
- Performs treatment intervention following physician orders such as medication administration and medical treatment orders.
- Interprets the nursing and treatment needs of the patient to non‑professional staff members assigned to the patient.
- Participates in individual, group, family psychotherapy, and educational seminars as appropriate.
- Enacts the counseling role of the nurse.
- Documents continuous assessment, interventions and evaluations relative to patient progress.
- Attends patient staffing and assumes responsibility for communication of treatment goals to pertinent staff members.
- Models for other staff effective communication with families, agencies and hospital personnel.
- Assists in placing patients in seclusion or restraints and observes suicide‑seclusion precautions.
- Models for staff appropriate telephone etiquette and intervention techniques.
- Provides psychiatric education to patient and family as needed.
- Provides resources and support for patient prior to, during and after treatment.
- Acts as a liaison between patients, families and other healthcare providers.
- Coordinates treatment with other health and social agencies.
- Actively involved in measuring patient performance and communicating results and trends to supervisor.
- Identifies areas needing improvement and utilizes the facility performance improvement process. Actively participates in department processes as required.
- Evaluates the appropriateness and quality of nursing care in a contiguous fashion.
- Monitors and enforces utilization or proper techniques and procedures. Supervises unlicensed staff.
- Assesses patient for fall risks and other risk factors.
- Insures facility is safe and reports deficiencies to supervisor.
- Coordinates the function of the therapeutic environment.
- Completes all required staff competencies per program regulations.
- Attends in‑services, seminars, etc. to promote learning.
