Job Description & How to Apply Below
Job description

The focus of the position is on teaching. Depending on your background and the teaching schedule, you will teach introductory and more advanced statistics courses, possibly other mathematics courses, supervise Bachelor's and Master's students, and contribute to the development and coordination of education. Bachelor’s programmes are both taught in English and Dutch; almost all Master's programmes at the University of Twente are taught in English.

Your profile
  • You hold a PhD in mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field, and have experience teaching statistics or mathematics.
  • You are an engaged and reliable teacher who can explain statistical concepts clearly to students with different mathematical backgrounds, including students outside mathematics.
  • You can teach statistics both as mathematical methodology and as a tool for empirical research, and you are comfortable with applications in different fields, such as engineering and health.
  • You are strongly committed to evidence-based scientific reasoning. You can critically and carefully interpret statistical evidence, communicate uncertainty and limitations clearly, and distinguish well-supported scientific conclusions from claims that are not supported by the available evidence.
  • You are open to modern approaches to teaching and learning and want to contribute to the further development of our statistics education and service teaching.
  • You are a collegial team player with good communication and organisational skills and an excellent command of English. Proficiency in Dutch, or a willingness to learn Dutch quickly, is an advantage.
  • You hold a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ), or are willing to obtain one.
Our offer
  • A full-time position as a lecturer (1.0 FTE / 40 hours a week) for a period of two years, with a starting date as soon as possible.
  • This position is particularly well suited to someone who would like to build an academic career in the Netherlands with a strong teaching profile. Within the Dutch Recognition & Rewards movement, there is increasing scope for academic career paths in which education forms a substantial part of the academic profile.
  • A position within the Statistics group of the Department of Applied Mathematics, with close contact with colleagues working on statistics, machine learning, and related topics.
  • Our terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Universities (CAO) and include a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3 %;
  • Depending on your relevant background and experience, the gross monthly salary ranges from € 3.706,- to € 5.760,- per month (scale 10);
  • A minimum of 29 leave days based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A fulltime employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis;
  • Furthermore, we offer a a family-friendly institution that offers parental leave (both paid and unpaid), free access to sports facilities on campus and excellent professional and personal development programs;
  • Finally, you will work in a lively and international academic working environment with considerable responsibility and room for your own input in teaching.
