Overview
The Advanced Organ Bioengineering and Therapeutics (AOT) group is developing a miniaturized extracorporeal device that combines artificial and biohybrid kidney functionalities. The project aims to create next‑generation polymeric membranes and membrane dialyzers for a miniaturized biohybrid kidney system, paving the way toward implantable artificial kidney solutions.
ResponsibilitiesAs a PhD candidate you will:
- Develop novel artificial membranes and membrane dialyzers.
- Investigate new cell‑culture protocols for membrane integration.
- Perform studies of uremic solute removal from human blood and assess blood compatibility.
- Contribute to the larger Biohybrid Kidney XB consortium program.
- Actively participate in the teaching programme, supervising BSc and MSc assignments and serving as a teaching assistant where required.
- Master’s degree (preferably with distinction) in Membrane Science and Technology, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Preferably experience or affinity with renal replacement therapies and blood compatibility assessment.
- Motivated, enthusiastic and capable of interdisciplinary work.
- Independent working style combined with effective teamwork in an international research environment.
- Excellent analytical, written and spoken communication skills.
- English language proficiency; a written test and scientific presentation may be part of the interview.
- Full‑time PhD position, four years with a qualifier in the first year.
- Gross monthly salary ranging from Euro 3,059 (first year) to Euro 3,881 (fourth year) in accordance with the CAO‑NU collective agreement.
- Benefits: 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end‑of‑year bonus, pension scheme, 232 leave hours (38‑hour week) plus 96 additional leave hours for 40‑hour week practice, free access to campus sports facilities, family‑friendly parental leave.
- Training programme offered through the Twente Graduate School, determined collaboratively with supervisors.
