A Post‑doc Position in Aluminium Oxide in the PIXEurope Pilot Line
Looking for a job that matters? Join the university of technology that puts people first and shape new opportunities both for yourself and for the broader community. The Integrated Optical Systems (IOS) group is seeking a motivated post‑doc to help set up and develop a 200mm pilot microfabrication line for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) in the aluminium oxide platform. The IOS group is a world leader in this platform, presently manufactured on the 100mm MESA+ Nanolab microfabrication facility.
Within the PIXEurope consortium the process will be transferred to 200mm manufacturing and a process design kit (PDK) of building blocks will be developed. This role offers a unique opportunity to help position Europe as a leader in integrated photonics.
- Ambitious, highly motivated, self‑driven.
- Good teamwork spirit, happy to help other team members.
- Knowledge of and experience in design, fabrication and characterization of integrated photonic circuits.
- Expertise in the deposition of optical materials, especially sputter deposition, will be a plus.
- Hands‑on experience in the operation and maintenance of PVD systems (i.e., sputtering, PLD, ALD).
- PhD in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or a related field with a strong research track record (publications, conference presentations, etc.).
- Experience conducting research within a multidisciplinary, highly diverse environment.
- Active in research‑funding networks and experience working closely with companies and government agencies.
- Good communication skills and excellent command of English.
- Full‑time position.
- Salary and conditions in accordance with the Dutch universities collective labour agreement (CAO‑NU).
- Gross monthly salary from €4,241 to €5,538, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Benefits include 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end‑of‑year bonus and a solid pension scheme.
- Minimum 232 leave hours for full‑time staff (based on a formal 38‑hour week) plus 96 extra leave hours for a 40‑hour practice week.
- Free access to campus sports facilities.
- Family‑friendly institution with paid and unpaid parental leave.
- Excellent career support and professional development courses.
Please send your application via the ‘Apply now’ button before 31 January 2026 and include:
- CV.
- A motivation letter explaining why you want to join the IOS group and this project (disclaimer: use of AI in writing the letter is discouraged).
- List of publications.

About the DepartmentThe post‑doc will be embedded in the IOS group within the Applied Nano Photonics (ANP) department, which hosts several professors across integrated photonics technology development, optical biosensing, microwave photonics and quantum photonics. Three groups in the department contribute to the PIXEurope project and the MESA+ Nanolab.
About the OrganisationThe Faculty of Science & Technology (Technische Natuurwetenschappen, TNW) employs about 700 staff and educates 2,000 students in cutting‑edge chemistry, applied physics and biomedical technology. Our research spans sustainable energy, process technology and materials science, nanotechnology and technical medicine, and is supported by national and international industrial partners. The faculty collaborates with the Mesa+ Institute, Tech Med Centre and Digital Society Institute.
