Job Description Overview

This position is for a Principal Dams & Reservoirs Engineer at Atkins

Réalis within the Design & Advanced Technology practice. The role involves leading a multi‑disciplinary team on complex reservoir and hydraulic projects for major UK water authorities such as Thames Water, Anglian Water, South East Water and Southern Water. The role is based in one of our Epsom, Peterborough or Cambridge offices and involves hybrid working (three days a week office/site based).

• Coordinate or manage a team of engineers and scientists for the delivery of technical design work on complex multi‑disciplinary reservoir and hydraulic structures projects, following relevant national and project‑specific design codes and standards.
• Produce and review technical deliverables such as design reports, drawings, calculations and scopes of work.
• Provide technical input on reservoir and hydraulic aspects of complex projects and manage time and budget to key milestones and programmes.
• Collaborate with clients, operational and project teams, and other Atkins
  
  Réalis teams.
• Mentor less experienced colleagues and help develop local Dams, Reservoirs and Hydraulic Structures engineering capabilities.
• Work independently with minimal technical guidance; exercise personal judgement to solve difficult problems.
• Provide technical support for bid proposals.
• Work closely with a multi‑disciplinary team across the UK and overseas to deliver integrated design solutions.
• Adhere to quality assurance standards in design, including checking and reviewing own and others’ work.

• Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
• Chartered or Incorporated Civil Engineer, or working towards Panel Engineer status.
• Proven experience in coordinating or managing an engineering design delivery team within a multi‑disciplinary consultancy.
• Strong knowledge and practical experience in the design of earth/concrete dams, flood walls, embankments, weirs, hydraulic structures, culverts, scour protection, access, and construction logistics.
• Familiarity with current design codes, standards and industry best practices, including CDM Regulations.
• Experience in the Water market is essential.
• Ability to work independently with minimal technical guidance.
• Effective communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

• The role may require security clearance. Applicants must be able to provide proof of five or more years of residency in the UK for vetting purposes.
