Financial Manager, Financial Reporting
The Horton is a registered charity and an award‑winning independent cultural venue in Epsom, Surrey hosting live performance, creative arts and events in a stunning listed building. The venue opened in 2022, following a major renovation works. The Horton Gardens opened in summer 2025.
The roleWe are seeking an experienced and hands‑on finance professional who will play a key role in The Horton’s financial health and future resilience. Working closely with the Director, Finance Committee and Board of Trustees, you will be providing the essential financial intelligence needed to guide key organisational decisions.
Key responsibilitiesBookkeeping
- Posting weekly sales and bank reconciliations to Xero
- Processing weekly payment run and managing the purchase ledger
- Raising sales invoices and managing the sales ledger
- Processing purchase orders and petty cash
- Maintaining customer/supplier records on Xero
- Banking of cash and cash‑handling as required
- Carrying out month‑end reconciliations and posting accounting journals to Xero Financial Management and Compliance
- Liaising with external payroll accountants and posting payroll records to Xero
- Leading on VAT and tax compliance, including preparation and submission of quarterly VAT and Gift Aid returns, ensuring full adherence to HMRC regulations, particularly those unique to the Charity sector, including partial exemption requirements and annual adjustments
- Managing all aspects of Charity SORP compliant financial reporting, including preparing and coordinating the year‑end process, working directly with external accountants
- Overseeing filing, compliance and reporting to regulators, including the Charities Commission, HMRC, Companies House and other relevant bodies as required
- Acting as main point of contact with external accountants, external HR advisors and banks
- Ensuring The Horton has appropriate insurance cover for all activities
- Monitoring cashflow and cash management between bank accounts
Financial Analysis, Reporting and Planning
- Preparing accurate and timely quarterly management accounts
- Providing robust financial information for the staff team, Director and Board Committees, including accurate and timely quarterly management accounts and narrative
- Reporting financial risks and issues to the Director and Board as required
- Leading on producing the annual budget, in consultation with the Director and Board Members
- Supporting the Director with strategy business planning and forecasting as required
Grant and Project Finance
- Supporting grant funding applications and claims, including budget and financial requirements
- Maintaining meticulous records for all restricted and designated funds, ensuring compliance with all donor and grant conditions
- Leading on preparing detailed financial reports for funders, ensuring all expenditure is accurately recorded and compliant with specific grant requirements
HR Management
- Ensuring that employee records on Bright
HR are up to date and complete - Processing new starter and leavers paperwork
- Acting as minute taker for formal HR meetings
- Acting as day‑to‑day point of contact with HR service provider
Other duties
- Instructing and supervising volunteers supporting with finance tasks
- Providing ad‑hoc support with Box Office customer service, as required
- Acting generally as a representative and ambassador of The Horton
- Abiding by The Horton’s policies and procedures
- Upholding The Horton’s values of tolerance, inclusion and diversity
- Working with The Horton team to ensure an excellent experience for all visitors
- Attending personal development and training, as required
- Undertaking any other duties as reasonably required
All applicants must be eligible to live and work in the UK.
Essential Requirements- Qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA/AAT) or qualified by experience, with at least 5 years’ experience in similar finance roles
- Practical knowledge and experience of VAT and other statutory filing requirements, including partial exemption and Group VAT Returns
- Proven ability to manage the full accounting cycle, from transaction entry through to preparing statutory accounts
