Joboverview
Step into a pivotal leadership role as one of only three Clinical Coding Team Managers in our department. Reporting directly to the Head of Department, you will hold a highly senior position where you lead, mentor, and inspire a dedicated team of 4-5 clinical coders. This is a dynamic ‘player-coach’ role; you will split your time roughly 50/50 between hands-on clinical coding and operational leadership, allowing you to stay clinically sharp while guiding your team.
You will be the strategic engine of our workflow—expertly balancing complex caseloads, managing long-stay patient lists, and driving both individual and team productivity. By collaborating closely with your fellow managers, you’ll help steer our overall uncoded backlog and ensure seamless support across all specialties. If you are an expert coder ready to elevate your career, shape departmental strategy, and make a tangible impact on patient data quality, this is your opportunity to be a key driver of our success.
duties of the job
In this senior role, you will be both a leader and a practitioner. Roughly half of your week will be spent hands-on coding across specialties such as Trauma & Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, and General Medicine amongst others using Cerner Millennium and Medicode, ensuring you stay clinically sharp and connected to your team’s daily reality. The other half is dedicated to operational leadership: you will use Excel to intelligently divide uncoded lists, balance workloads to prevent burnout, and monitor both individual and team productivity.
You’ll also collaborate closely with the other two Team Managers to strategise on the overall departmental backlog and manage day-to-day team wellbeing, leave, and performance.
To thrive here, you must be an Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) with at least three years of experience and strong Excel skills for workload analysis and distribution. Beyond technical ability, we are looking for someone with excellent communication, a genuine commitment to team harmony, and a versatile, can-do mindset that balances high performance with compassion. In return, we offer hybrid working, flexible hours to support work-life balance, regular clinical coding training, and direct mentorship from senior leadership to support your ongoing career progression.
