overview

The Paediatric Respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist will provide specialist nursing care, assessment, treatment, education and ongoing support to children and young people with asthma and other respiratory conditions across acute and community settings. The post holder will manage a specialist caseload, deliver nurse-led and multidisciplinary clinics, undertake respiratory assessments including FeNO and spirometry, and provide expert advice to children, families and healthcare professionals.

The role will work closely with paediatric respiratory consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team to coordinate care, support safe discharge and transition to adult services, and promote evidence-based asthma and respiratory management. The post holder will also contribute to staff education, clinical audit, research, quality improvement, clinical governance and implementation of national asthma and respiratory standards across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Manage a specialist caseload of children and young people with asthma and respiratory conditions, providing assessment, treatment, education and ongoing support.
  • Deliver nurse-led and multidisciplinary asthma/respiratory clinics and undertake specialist assessments, including FeNO, spirometry and skin prick testing.
  • Provide specialist respiratory nursing advice and education to children, young people, families, carers and healthcare professionals.
  • Support medicines optimisation and prescribe independently where appropriate, in accordance with service requirements.
  • Coordinate care across acute, community and primary care settings, including complex discharge planning and transition to adult services.
  • Provide education, clinical supervision and mentoring to nursing colleagues and act as a specialist respiratory resource across the Trust.
  • Lead and contribute to clinical audit, research, quality improvement, clinical governance and implementation of national asthma and respiratory standards.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to the development and review of local asthma and respiratory guidelines and pathways.
