UPMC Hamot is adding a part-time Professional Staff Nurse to the TNICU!

We are currently hiring an experienced, caring, compassionate, team-oriented nurse with a passion for learning who excels in critical thinking. The TNICU is a 16-bed unit on the second floor of the patient care tower.  The exceptional care provided in this unit contributes to UPMC Hamot's certification as a Level II Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and a Silver Beacon Award Unit.

The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and an essential member of the care delivery team. This role is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered nursing care while establishing and upholding standards of practice. The Professional Staff Nurse exercises independent clinical judgment and is accountable for the coordination, delivery, and evaluation of nursing care for patients and their families. Through leadership, collaboration, and partnership with physicians and interdisciplinary team members, the Professional Staff Nurse promotes optimal patient outcomes across the continuum of care and demonstrates a commitment to the nursing profession and the community served.

Responsibilities

Professional Practice & Collaboration

+ Develops and maintains productive, respectful working relationships by demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.

Patient-Centered Care

+ Applies the nursing process within a Relationship-Based Care framework to create a healing environment.

+ Develops daily goals and individualized plans of care in partnership with patients and families, addressing clinical, psychosocial, safety, and spiritual needs.

+ Demonstrates critical thinking and clinical judgment to assess patient status and recommend appropriate care interventions.

+ Communicates clearly and effectively with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary care team.

+ Maintains accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation to support continuity of care.

+ Creates a compassionate, patient-focused experience by building therapeutic relationships.

Education & Professional Development

+ Applies adult learning principles (and pediatric teaching principles when applicable) when educating patients, families, students, and staff.

+ Provides education to support patient understanding, self-care, and transitions across care settings.

+ Supports the development of students, new staff, and colleagues and may serve as a preceptor.

+ Fosters an environment of inquiry and continuous improvement by seeking feedback and refining practice.

Leadership & Shared Governance

+ Demonstrates accountability for ongoing professional development to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.

+ Actively participates in unit-based shared governance, goal setting, and initiatives that enhance the practice environment.

+ Serves as an engaged partner on the care team and collaborates readily to meet patient and team needs.

Quality & Evidence-Based Practice

+ Actively participates in unit- and department-based quality improvement initiatives.

+ Identifies opportunities to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction and communicates findings to leadership and colleagues.

+ Integrates research and evidence-based practice into clinical decision-making.

+ Contributes to multidisciplinary discussions and influences patient care plans to support continuous improvement.

+ Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care to the patient populations served by the assigned unit.

+ Knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan, with the ability to assess patient data and identify age-specific needs in accordance with department policies and procedures.

+ Zero to two (0-2) years of nursing experience required.

+ Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

+ Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with executives, managers, physicians, advanced practice providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients and families.

+ Ability to work effectively in a complex, fast-paced environment while managing multiple and changing priorities and specialized equipment.
