Possession of a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent and one of the following:

• A minimum of two years of study (48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education.
• An associate’s degree or higher.
• Passing a rigorous assessment that demonstrates knowledge and the ability to assist in instruction, reading, writing, and mathematics at a level meeting State and Federal requirements.

Applicants may be exempt from taking the NCLB examination if they provide college transcripts verifying 48 units or more in core subject area courses with a grade of “C” or better. Transcripts must be submitted with the application. If an applicant does not possess enough units to be exempt, he/she must attach to their application a letter requesting an examination date.

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications are required to take a writing assessment examination regardless of meeting the NCLB requirements.

Please note:

applicants will not be able to submit their application without attaching either transcripts or a letter requesting an examination date.

• Copy of transcripts (college transcripts verifying 48 units or more in core subject area courses with a grade of “C” or better).
• Or a letter requesting to take the NCLB examination and selecting document type “other.”
