The Opportunity

The YMCA of San Diego County runs after-school programs at 18 elementary school campuses in Escondido. It needs patient Inclusion Leaders to support Pre-K through 5th grade students with special needs so they can join homework time, games, and enrichment activities with their friends. This role is also called a special education aide, paraprofessional, or inclusion aide. Pick up single afternoons that fit your week, or take a long-term assignment through the end of the school year and become a familiar face for the same student every day.

What

You’ll Do Each Day
  • Be there for your student(s): Provide 1:1 or small-group support to students with mild to more significant special needs so they can take part in the regular after-school program day.
  • Help with the everyday stuff: Support students during homework help, enrichment activities, games, and snack time. Some assignments include toileting and personal care, and those pay $25 per hour.
  • Build independence: Use gentle prompting, then step back, so students can do more on their own over time.
  • Bring calm and consistency: Support positive behavior, follow each student’s support plan, and step in calmly when a student needs help de-escalating or staying safe.
  • Keep everyone safe: Provide continual supervision, follow YMCA program standards, and serve as a positive role model.
  • Keep everyone in the loop: Check in with the site supervisor and share how the afternoon went.
What You Bring
  • Education: An associate’s degree or at least 48 college units.
  • Clearances: A background check (Live Scan fingerprinting) and a quick TB risk assessment. Live Scan cost reimbursed in your paycheck after your 10th day worked.
  • Experience (a big plus): Work with kids in after-school programs, child care, day camp, or recreation, especially if you’ve supported kids with special needs.
  • CPR/First Aid: Certification is a plus.
  • Patience: Plenty of it, plus a warm, upbeat way of showing up for kids.

College students, camp counselors, and after-school staff tend to do well in this role.

Where You’ll Work & Your Schedule
  • Location: On-site at YMCA after-school programs on elementary school campuses in Escondido, plus other YMCA sites across San Diego County.
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday afternoons, roughly 2pm to 6pm. Long-term assignments are about 25 hours a week, and single-day assignments run 4 to 5 hours.
  • Flexibility: Choose single afternoons or a long-term assignment through the end of the school year.
  • Getting oriented: You’ll learn your site, routines, and student needs when you check in on day one.
  • Pay: $23 per hour, or $25 per hour for assignments that include toileting support. Paid weekly every Friday.
  • Employment type: W-2 employee with access to medical and 401(k) options.
  • Bonuses: Extra pay for high-need and last-minute requests, plus $100 when you refer a friend.
  • Priority access: Show up consistently and you may earn Swing Hero status, giving you first look at local requests.
  • Free training: Skill-building resources to grow your confidence working with kids.
What to Expect After You Apply
  • Create your account: Set up your Swing profile in about 10 minutes.
  • Confirm your education: We’ll check using some of your provided information.
  • Sign your offer letter, then book Live Scan right away: Live Scan is the step that takes the longest, and results can take up to a few weeks, so booking early gets you working sooner.
  • Finish your hiring steps online: TB risk assessment, I-9, payroll setup, and a short orientation.
  • Pick your first assignment: Most new subs finish onboarding in about three weeks. Then you can choose your first Escondido afternoon.

Our support team can help with any step along the way.
