Location: San Diego, CA
About the RoleWe are seeking a Senior Principal Systems Safety Engineer to join our team and contribute to mission‑critical programs in a rapidly evolving global security environment. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting‑edge technologies and systems that enable strategic planning and operational excellence. You will play a key role in ensuring system safety across complex, multi‑domain platforms while collaborating with cross‑functional teams to deliver innovative solutions.
Responsibilities- Serve as a subject matter expert in system safety for assigned programs.
- Develop and deliver safety documentation, including:
- System Safety Hazard Assessments (SSHA)
- Safety Assessment Reports (SAR)
- Hazardous Materials Management Plans (HMMP)
- Operating and Support Hazard Analyses (O&SHA)
- Manage and mitigate hazards identified during design, operation, and maintenance phases.
- Collaborate with engineering, logistics, quality assurance, and regulatory teams to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Maintain and update System Safety Program Plans.
- Conduct technical risk analysis and participate in airworthiness reviews.
- Facilitate System Safety Working Groups and promote best practices across programs.
- Provide guidance and training on system safety processes and methodologies.
- Perform independent safety analyses and recommend risk mitigation strategies.
- Education & Experience:
- Senior Principal Level: 5 years with a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, OR 3 years with a Master’s degree, OR PhD with relevant experience.
- Principal Level: 8 years with a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, OR 6 years with a Master’s degree, OR 4 years with a PhD.
- Knowledge of aircraft certification standards and system safety standards (e.g., MIL-STD-882, ARP
4761). - Proficiency in system safety tools and techniques, including Fault Tree Analysis.
- Experience in risk analysis and proposal development (Basis of Estimates).
- Ability to work effectively across multiple engineering disciplines.
- Experience in Safety Engineering, Reliability Engineering, and Airworthiness.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
