Qualifications / Education & Training- Minimum high school diploma or GED
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- AA degree or Para Pro Exam
- Knowledge/
Skills and Abilities:
Prior work with special education children preferred - Bilingual skills in English and Spanish preferred
Passing score options for Para Pro or Para Educator, or Core Academic Skills for Educators:
Reading, Writing, and Mathematics; or higher degree with relevant credits, as described below:
- Passing score on Para Pro (457);
- Passing score on Para Educator (70% in each section);
- Passing Score and completion of the Core Academic Skills for Educators:
Reading, Writing, and Mathematics; - Minimum of 48 semester hours of college credit from a regionally accredited college or university with 15 credits in language arts (3), mathematics (3), writing (3), and reading, writing, math readiness, or professional education (6);
- Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with 15 credits in language arts (3), mathematics (3), writing (3), and reading, writing, math readiness, or professional education (6);
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university with the above credits.
- Assist the student(s) to whom assigned with physical tasks, movement between rooms, and use of restroom as needed.
- Assist the student(s) with eating; work under the supervision of the special education teacher to help the student(s) complete school work.
- Accompany the student(s) when they leave the special education classroom; establish a supportive relationship while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Hears the student(s) in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, guiding and helping them but not teaching them.
- Greet the student(s) daily and accompany them during school activities without fostering intense emotional involvement.
- Assist with recreation and leisure activities and instruction (e.g., swimming, bowling, field trips).
- Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
- Work with individual, small, and large groups to reinforce learning and enhance skills;
- Check notebooks, correct papers, and assist with administration of assignments and make up work;
- Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in other positive forms of oral communication;
- Assist with supervision during drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips;
- Alert the teacher to concerns specific to students;
- Assist students in the library or media center.
- Help students with clothing as needed;
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
- Serve as the main information source and assistance to substitutes in the absence of the teacher;
- Operate instructional equipment;
- Assist with classroom displays; collect and record money as assigned by the teacher;
- Assist with snack, lunch, and bathroom procedures;
- Participate in in-service training as assigned.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the teacher or principal.
Job Requirements
- Must possess excellent teamwork skills and willingness to accept delegated responsibilities;
- Ability to work under occasional stress;
- Familiarity with child restraint methods, first aid, and CPR; capable of using child restraint if necessary.
- Demonstrates reliability through attendance and punctuality;
- Notifies supervisor of absences or tardiness;
- Begins and completes work within the allotted time;
- Maintains professional attire appropriate to the work environment;
- Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment and protects district resources;
- Uses proper body mechanics to prevent injury.
Employment Requirements: Upon offer of employment, pass a pre-employment drug test and comply with applicable laws, pass a background check, and provide necessary documentation qualifications.
Terms of Employment: Determined by student needs.
Evaluation: Performance evaluated in accordance with the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
