MUSIC TEACHER

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Properly certified in all areas of assignment;
  • Demonstrate cooperativeness and willingness to carry out assigned tasks and perform responsibilities;
  • Bilingual endorsement if highly preferable.
  • Other qualifications determined necessary by the Board.

REPORTS TO: Principal or designee

GENERAL SUPERVISOR: Superintendent

JOB GOAL: To develop in each pupil an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal or instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of music, to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to Middle and High School students. Utilize the teaching competencies and curriculum/bilingual curriculum adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship, expected student behavior, and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Plan a balanced music program and organize daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished with the allotted time.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Utilize repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
  • Control the storage and use of school-owned property; make minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments as required.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals and musical performances.
  • Evaluate each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.
  • Plan, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community
  • Select and requisition books, musical instruments, instructional aids and maintain required inventory records.
  • Communicate with parents bi-weekly, monthly or sooner as the need arises, on a student's progress and behavior.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
  • Cooperate with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies and civic functions.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
  • Participate in curriculum alignment, benchmarks, performance standards/assessments and revisions, inclusive of bilingual development programs and implement EPSS.
  • Gather data to develop strategies for student improvement
  • Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities to include; in and out of school activities.
  • Maintain professional competencies through in-service education activities provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  • Administer Group Standardized Tests in accordance with the district testing program.
  • Administer the Language Assessment Scale Testing and Scoring in both English and Spanish.
  • Attend board meetings at the request of the Superintendent and/or his authorized designee.
  • Perform other assigned tasks required by the supervisor(s).

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:

Terms of employment are to be established on an annual basis, through the adoption of the school calendar.

SALARY:

Salary to be established on an annual basis through the adoption of the salary schedules.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy
