Private Sector Housing Officer

Location: Essex (Hybrid working available)

Rate: £50 per hour (Inside IR35)

Contract Length: 6 months (strong likelihood of extension)

A local authority in Essex is seeking an experienced Private Sector Housing Officer to join their team on an initial 6‑month contract, with the potential for extension depending on service needs.

• Managing HMO licensing, including inspections, assessments, and compliance
• Carrying out HHSRS inspections across the private rented sector
• Investigating complaints and delivering housing enforcement action where required
• Preparing schedules of works, notices, and supporting legal action when necessary
• Working closely with landlords, tenants, and internal teams to improve housing standards

• Proven experience in Private Sector Housing within a local authority setting
• Strong working knowledge of HMO legislation, HHSRS, and enforcement powers
• Ability to manage a caseload with minimal supervision
• Excellent communication and report-writing skills
• Relevant qualification (e.g. Environmental Health / Housing) desirable

• £50 per hour inside IR35
