An ideal SAP Basis Support Engineer is a technically strong systems administrator with expertise in SAP landscapes (S/4
HANA, Net Weaver, HANA DB, Sybase ASE), strong database and OS administration skills, and a deep understanding of system copies, transports, upgrades, and security.
They must excel in troubleshooting, monitoring, and incident management, while ensuring compliance and system resilience. Strong soft skills (communication, documentation, teamwork) are as critical as technical expertise.
Future-ready engineers should also develop cloud administration, automation, and S/4
HANA migration skills to support digital transformation initiatives.
- System Administration (SAP Basis)
- Managing SAP system landscapes, daily monitoring, log analysis, and troubleshooting
- Database Administration
- Understanding HANA DB with HSR, Sybase ASE with HADR, MaxDB, Oracle, SQL Server for backups, recovery, performance tuning
- OS Knowledge (Linux/Unix/Windows)
- Managing SAP environments across multiple platforms
- System Monitoring
- Using SAP tools (SM50, ST22, SM37) and OS-level monitoring to ensure stability of system and interfaces
- Performance Tuning
- Identifying system bottlenecks, tuning DB, and optimizing workloads
- SAP Installation & Configuration
- End-to-end setup of SAP Net Weaver, S/4
HANA, SAP Cloud Connecter, SAP UI5/Fiori
- System Copies & Client Administration
- Refreshing systems, managing clients, transports
- Transport Management System (TMS)
- Moving changes across landscapes
- SAP Kernel Upgrades & Patching
- Keeping systems secure and updated
- Solution Manager (Sol Man)
- Monitoring, Change Request Management (ChaRM), and Early Watch Alerts
- SAP HANA Administration
- In-memory DB optimization, schema management, backups
- Upgrade & Migration Support
- Supporting SP/FP stack and release upgrades
- User & Role Administration
- Creating, modifying, and managing authorizations
- Data Protection (GDPR etc.)
- Secure Configuration
- Hardening SAP systems, encryption, and secure communication setup
- Root cause analysis and performance investigation
- SAP on Cloud (Azure)
- Managing SAP Basis in IaaS/PaaS cloud environments
- Automation & Scripting - Shell, Python, or Power Shell Scripting for repetitive tasks
- Dev Ops Integration: CI/CD pipelines with SAP transports and monitoring
- Modern Monitoring Tools:
Integration with tools like Dynatrace, Grafana
