Veterinary Assistant, Emergency |$16 - $20/hr, based on experience

Florida Veterinary Referral Center (FVRC) in Estero, FL is hiring Veterinary Assistants to join our Emergency team. This is an opportunity for a Veterinary Assistant who wants to build hands-on clinical skills, gain experience in emergency and specialty medicine, and grow within a supportive veterinary hospital.

Our Veterinary Assistants work closely with Veterinary Technicians and the medical team to provide patient care, maintain a clean and organized hospital, assist with procedures, and support clients and their pets throughout their visit.

Compensation

Responsibilities

As a Veterinary Assistant on the Emergency team, you will support patient care, hospital operations, and the Veterinary Technician team in a fast-paced specialty and emergency environment.

  • Clean and maintain hospital areas, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, laundry, windows, trash removal, and bathrooms

  • Keep hospital supplies stocked and organized

  • Set up and maintain clean, sanitary, orderly, and odor-free kennels

  • Feed and bathe patients and assist with general patient care

  • Safely restrain patients and assist Veterinary Technicians with treatments and procedures

  • Perform TPRs and administer medications as directed and with appropriate supervision

  • Assist with restraint for radiographs, ultrasounds, and other diagnostic procedures

  • Assist with cleaning and setting up surgical suites

  • Support patient transport and movement throughout the hospital

  • Assist clients with their pets when entering or leaving the hospital, including helping transport pets to client vehicles when needed

  • Provide courteous and compassionate assistance to clients and their pets

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized patient care environment

  • Cross-train in front office and Client Care responsibilities as needed

  • Learn and demonstrate continued progress and proficiency with FVRC Level Skills

  • Develop knowledge of hospital policies, medication calculations, medication terminology, and common abbreviations

  • Participate in training and skill development with support from the Nurse Supervisor and Veterinary Technician team

  • Work collaboratively with Veterinary Technicians, veterinarians, Client Care, and other hospital team members

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Previous veterinary experience preferred

  • Basic knowledge of veterinary medicine, including patient restraint, diagnostic imaging, surgical equipment, laboratory equipment, and laboratory procedures preferred

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work effectively with clients and veterinary team members

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced emergency and specialty veterinary hospital

  • Ability to learn new clinical skills, hospital procedures, and veterinary terminology

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds

  • Ability to consistently walk, bend, stand, and reach during a minimum 8-hour workday

  • Fine motor skills sufficient to operate hospital equipment including electric clippers, syringes, radiology equipment, laboratory equipment, and computers

  • Compassionate approach to patients, clients, and fellow team members

  • Fluent English speaking and reading skills required.

  • Fluency in multiple languages is a plus
