The role of Lifeguard maintains a safe aquatic environment at all times, meeting YMCA and regulatory requirements. The role provides supervision and support to participants while promoting a positive and engaging camp experience. The role contributes to the overall success of Outdoor Centre programs through collaboration with staff and commitment to safety and well-being.
In this role, you will:
Ensure that all safety and lifeguarding procedures are followed and respond to emergencies as trained by the Lifesaving Society and YMCAEnsure members, volunteers, and other staff adhere to pool conduct guidelines and maintain order in designated areas to proactively prevent accidentsComplete a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shiftSet up and take down recreational, program, and other equipment as required, ensuring all equipment is safe and in good repair and immediately reporting or removing any damaged equipmentAssist the staff team with cleaning duties related to the pool and equipmentCollaborate with program members, volunteers, and YMCA staff to assist and encourage participants to access additional appropriate programs offered at the locationAttend all staff trainings and meetings, arrive on time, and actively participate to contribute to the development of all camp staffEnsure Health and Safety procedures are followed and maintained, and contribute to the cleaning, safety, and maintenance of camp sitesEnsure qualifications and certifications required by the YMCA and regulatory standards are current at all timesAct as a positive role model for campers and fellow staff by embodying YMCA values, policies, procedures, Day Camp guidelines, and Ontario Camping Association standardsPerform other duties as assignedYou bring:
Current certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards:
National Lifeguard (NL) Award, Standard First Aid & CPR level “C”Previous experience in lifeguarding is an assetYMCA Outdoor Centre or Day Camp experience is an assetAbility to use frequent light to medium physical effort, including lifting up to 50 lbs. by bending, carrying, pushing, and pulling (e.g., canoes, kayaks)Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environmentWell-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with families, staff, and volunteersExcellent communication skills and ability to lead a group of childrenMinimum 17 years old by December 31stFlexibility regarding assigned hours of work, weekday afternoons, evenings and weekendsCommitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belongingWhat you need to succeed:
