The Swim Instructor position delivers and assesses lessons using the YMCA Swim Lesson program curriculum and resources. Instructors develop weekly lesson plans tailored to the unique needs of each participant while maintaining a safe and engaging environment at all times. When not teaching, instructors serve as Lifeguards, ensuring the aquatic environment remains safe and compliant with YMCA standards and regulatory requirements.
In this role, you will:
Ensure all safety and lifeguarding procedures are adhered to and respond in the event of an emergency as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving SocietyDevelop and implement sequential weekly lesson plansDeliver course content and examine participants following established YMCA criteriaRecognize participant learning styles and deliver content accordinglyCommunicate child’s progress to parents or guardians through written and verbal report cardsMaintain accurate and up-to-date weekly progress sheets and records for participantsEnsure qualifications and certifications required by the YMCA and regulatory standards remain current at all timesComplete a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shiftEnsure Health & Safety procedures are followed and contribute to the cleaning, safety, and maintenance of camp sitesSet up and take down recreational, program, and other equipment as required, checking that equipment is safe and in good repair, reporting and removing damaged equipment immediatelyAttend all staff trainings and meetings, arriving on time and actively participating to contribute to the development of all camp staffAct as a positive role model for campers and fellow staff by embodying YMCA values, policies, procedures, Day Camp guidelines, and Ontario Camping Association standardsPerform other duties as assignedYou bring:
Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards:
National Lifeguard (NL) Award, Standard First Aid & CPR level “C”Current YMCA or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certificationPrevious experience lifeguarding and instructing swim lessons is an assetYMCA Outdoor Centre or Day Camp experience is an assetAbility to use frequent light to medium physical effort, including lifting up to 50 lbs. by bending, carrying, pushing, and pullingExcellent communication skills and ability to lead a group of childrenDemonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environmentWell-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with families, staff, and volunteersFlexibility regarding assigned hours of work, weekday afternoons, evenings and weekendsMinimum age 17 years old by December 31stCommitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belongingWhat you need to succeed:
