The Swim Instructor position delivers and assesses lessons using the YMCA Swim Lesson program curriculum and resources. Instructors develop weekly lesson plans tailored to the unique needs of each participant while maintaining a safe and engaging environment at all times. When not teaching, instructors serve as Lifeguards, ensuring the aquatic environment remains safe and compliant with YMCA standards and regulatory requirements.

In this role, you will:

  • Ensure all safety and lifeguarding procedures are adhered to and respond in the event of an emergency as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving Society
  • Develop and implement sequential weekly lesson plans
  • Deliver course content and examine participants following established YMCA criteria
  • Recognize participant learning styles and deliver content accordingly
  • Communicate child’s progress to parents or guardians through written and verbal report cards
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date weekly progress sheets and records for participants
  • Ensure qualifications and certifications required by the YMCA and regulatory standards remain current at all times
  • Complete a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shift
  • Ensure Health & Safety procedures are followed and contribute to the cleaning, safety, and maintenance of camp sites
  • Set up and take down recreational, program, and other equipment as required, checking that equipment is safe and in good repair, reporting and removing damaged equipment immediately
  • Attend all staff trainings and meetings, arriving on time and actively participating to contribute to the development of all camp staff
  • Act as a positive role model for campers and fellow staff by embodying YMCA values, policies, procedures, Day Camp guidelines, and Ontario Camping Association standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • You bring:

  • Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards:
    National Lifeguard (NL) Award, Standard First Aid & CPR level “C”
  • Current YMCA or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification
  • Previous experience lifeguarding and instructing swim lessons is an asset
  • YMCA Outdoor Centre or Day Camp experience is an asset
  • Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort, including lifting up to 50 lbs. by bending, carrying, pushing, and pulling
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to lead a group of children
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environment
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with families, staff, and volunteers
  • Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work, weekday afternoons, evenings and weekends
  • Minimum age 17 years old by December 31st
