The Aquatics Team Leader ensures a safe and engaging environment for all aquatic programs, including recreational swimming and swim lessons. This role combines leadership and hands-on involvement, guiding lifeguards and swim instructors while supporting program planning and tracking participants’ progress. Alongside leading the team, the Aquatics Team Leader actively participates in lifeguarding duties, helps set up and maintain program equipment and the environment, oversees activities during sessions, and contributes to the cleanup and takedown of equipment.

In this role, you will:

  • Ensure the pool is properly set up with all paperwork and safety equipment required to meet YMCA of Greater Toronto regulations as well as provincial standards in coordination with the Assistant Director, Outdoor Education
  • Provide leadership and coaching to swimming instructors, ensuring all YMCA Quality Indicators are met in swimming lessons and demonstrating effective teaching techniques during classes as needed
  • Provide ongoing feedback to lifeguards and swimming instructors to support performance and skill development
  • Ensure qualifications and certifications required by the YMCA and regulatory standards remain current at all times
  • Ensure Health & Safety procedures are followed and contribute to the cleaning, safety, and maintenance of the Outdoor Centre
  • Complete a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shift
  • Ensure all safety and lifeguarding procedures are adhered to and respond in the event of an emergency as trained by the Lifesaving Society and YMCA
  • Attend all staff trainings and meetings, arriving on time and actively participating to contribute to the development of all aquatics staff
  • Act as a positive role model for Outdoor Centre participants, day campers, and fellow staff by embodying YMCA values, policies, procedures, Day Camp guidelines, and Ontario Camping Association standards
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • You bring:

  • Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards:
    National Lifeguard (NL) Award, Standard First Aid & CPR level “C”
  • Current YMCA or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification
  • Pool Operator certification is an asset
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working in an aquatic environment
  • Previous experience lifeguarding and instructing swim lessons is an asset
  • Experience working with children is preferred
  • Experience working as a supervisor or Team Lead is preferred
  • YMCA Outdoor Centre or Day Camp experience is an asset
  • Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort, including lifting up to 50 lbs. by bending, carrying, pushing, and pulling
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to lead a group of children
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environment
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with families, staff, and volunteers
  • Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work, including evenings and weekends
  • Minimum age 18 years old by June 29th
