Responsibilities- The operator is responsible for safety, workmanship, product quality and productivity in the performance of the job.
- Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
- Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work‑piece as guides for subsequent machining as necessary.
- Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines as necessary to machine parts as required.
- Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media according to established guidelines and procedures.
- Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out‑of‑tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
- Verifies conformance of finished work‑piece to specifications, using measuring and inspection tools as necessary.
- Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
- Performs routine maintenance tasks on machines as required.
- Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area and maintains all equipment, to like new appearance, according to maintenance plans and established procedures.
- Maintains a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that you get along with customers, clients, co‑workers and management.
- Continuously grows in knowledge and maximizes use of tools to identify and assist with continuous improvement.
- Ensures that safe work practices are followed and adhered to.
- Complies with safety regulations and maintains clean and orderly work areas.
- Produces and updates setup sheets when a job is completed.
- Obtains measuring devices from the crib as needed.
- Participates in cross‑training of employees to provide flexibility.
- Required lifting of up to 50 lbs.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Five (5) or more years previous experience as a machinist.
- Previous welding industry experience is a plus; knowledge of welding is preferred.
- 1-2 years mechanical assembly experience is a plus.
- Basic reading skills; must be able to follow directions.
- Basic computer navigation and utilization skills.
- Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
- Ability to use thinking and reasoning to solve a problem and to think in such a way as to produce a new concept or idea.
- High attention to detail and self‑motivation skills.
- Specific technical or vocational training or certification preferred.
- Advanced measurement skills (mics, calipers, indicators, etc.).
- Advanced knowledge of feeds and speeds.
- Complex blueprint reading skills.
- Proficient in shop mathematics including trigonometry.
- Understand basic GD&T call‑outs.
- Knowledgeable of all quality procedures used to process items in work center.
- Ability and knowledge to meet all written specifications and prints, and ensure compliance with all standards.
