Department Summary

The Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) is a research institute that reports to the Vice President for Research and Innovation. We have 18 labs and approximately 150 employees, including 45 graduate students who train in our labs. We have an administrative structure, which includes accounting, purchasing, personnel, PI support, building management, and three service centers. Our annual budget is about $9.5 million, primarily from federal research and training grants.

Position

Summary

The research assistant will be responsible for managing a research project and laboratory, as well as conducting original research, both independently and in teams, on microbiome assembly and function in zebrafish. As project manager, this person will perform duties to support the research operations of a large-scale project, and as a laboratory manager will support laboratory operations, including organizing research meetings, coordinating personnel training, ordering supplies, managing data storage and record keeping, and maintaining equipment.

The required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field.
  • Experience with one of the following: molecular biology, microbiology, or animal research.
  • Ability to communicate effectively while working with members of a large research team with diverse scientific backgrounds.
  • Excellent organization skills for budget management, equipment maintenance, and regulatory compliance.
  • Knowledge of operations of a molecular biology laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications

The preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Experience with zebrafish research.
  • Experience with bacterial genetics.
  • Experience with protein biochemistry.
  • Experience with bioinformatics.
